What things has the free market done lately to make it easier for people to "climb up the ladder" themselves?

Where is this "free market" you speak of? It seems like a great idea. We should try it.

A free market is a market where the price of a good or service is, in theory, determined by supply and demand, rather than by governmental regulation.[1] A free market contrasts with a controlled market or regulated market, where price, supply or demand are subject to regulation or direct control by government. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_market

well gee, let's see. We have so many markets free of government intervention, it's hard to choose!!!!!

The free market doesn't work when the government is interfering as much as it is. Things are way out of whack. The less the government interferes, the more free the market is, the better it can display the benefits of a free market.

I suppose professional sports is a good example of where the market performs the closest to the principles of a free market. And even though drugs are illegal and you can be locked up, the black market for weed especially is a great example of how a free market operates, albeit in the dark. Prices have been stable for generations, and the quality has improved, and if you are poor you can get the cheap shit and if you are rich you can get the plurple-urps. You get what you pay for, and you can always turn it down if it's bunk. Supply and demand are relevant, and prices act accordingly.

The free market has a pretty good track record when it comes to food production as well. Mao and Stalin....not so much

FORWARD!!!
Image

The Great Leap Forward ended in catastrophe, resulting in tens of millions of excess deaths.[3] Estimates of the death toll range from 18 million[4] to 45 million,[5] with estimates by demographic specialists ranging from 18 million to 32.5 million.[4] Historian Frank Dikötter asserts that "coercion, terror, and systematic violence were the very foundation of the Great Leap Forward" and it "motivated one of the most deadly mass killings of human history."[6]

The years of the Great Leap Forward in fact saw economic regression, with 1958 through 1961 being the only years between 1953 and 1983 in which China's economy saw negative growth. Political economist Dwight Perkins argues, "enormous amounts of investment produced only modest increases in production or none at all. … In short, the Great Leap was a very expensive disaster."[7]

In subsequent conferences in 1960 and 1962, the negative effects of the Great Leap Forward were studied by the CPC, and Mao was criticized in the party conferences. Moderate Party members like Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping rose to power, and Mao was marginalized within the party, leading him to initiate the Cultural Revolution in 1966.

Then were you implying that "free market" doesn't exist or doesn't work, or something else?

I was just asking for evidence that free markets have taken steps in modern times to give more opportunities to the poor, or, in the absence of truly free markets having done so, evidence that free market principles have done so.

For some reason, I am reminded of a quote from MASH by uber-patriot Major Burns, mostly just because the word free triggered it, ha.

The way I see it, unless we each conform, unless we obey orders, unless we follow our leaders blindly, there is no possible way we can remain free.

There is plenty of economically free industries in the US and around the world.

Sure most of them are subject to at least some form of regulation. But that doesnt neccessarily mean that there is any significant distortion away from pareto efficiency.

I'm not worried about over-regulation or over-taxation. A free market is not a market in which lobbyists can obtain competitive advantages for their clients.

In related news, we're up to 1,200 Affordable Care Act waivers for various Obama-supporting companies.

This is a troll thread. No need to try to redefine me. I think people know who I am and what I'm about

For example: I never supported Romney, but you are acting like I was his number one fan. You probably don't even realize you are trying to torment a Ron Paul guy with Mitt Romney. The joke is on you

I'm not as ardently libertarian as someone like BBS. I know there should be regulation and taxation. My issue with both is that they are often and increasingly self-serving things. When the people and companies who are meant to be regulated or taxed are the ones directly or indirectly writing the regulations and taxes, we're no longer talking about a free market economy or anything close to a free market economy. Where you and I differ is how much we want the government to be involved generally. I want defense, police, fire, and that's about it.
