Why? Any particular reason? I would think if we ocean farmed whales we could feed a lot more people in the world than raising cattle. Its not so much thinking they have feelings, its kind of more a scientific fact. As far as treating them like humans, well, certainly if they drive they should get a drivers license, but for the most part, I think you are confusing people treating them like one of God's creatures, not people.

One of the most peaceful places on the planet allows the killing of whales. I assume there are no hippies living there (only the ones that show up for the overly blown television series Whale Wars).

Whales are (well at least the ones that are consumed for meat) for the most part endangered. Not having natural enemies they don't exactly breed like rabbits.

Seriously, a cow can have a new calf about once a year, without any artificial enhancements. A whale, to contrast, can only calve every 2-3 years. It takes too long for a whale to get big, reproduce.

Then you have the food argument itself---Cows eat grass, the "chaff" or parts that are inedible to human beings, like goats and sheep (but pigs, to contrast eat "human-viable" food). Whales eat either other fish or plankton. The amount of ocean necessary to support more than occasional whaling is huge. In short, many of the most classic arguments about why folks should be vegetarien are actually wrong when it comes to ruminents, but true when it comes to whales. The slight exceptions are in the high arctic. But, the amount of whaling historically done there was minimal. It takes a LOT of effort to get just one whale in the indigenous manner. Further, the human populations in those areas (Greenland, Alaska, Russian, etc.) was never all that high.

For both of those reasons, the number of whales humans could ever take sustainably is minimal.

Per farming... we can barely keep a few whales alive in highly intensive entertainment units like Sea world. We are no where near to being able to farm them in a productive way.

On top of all this, you have the intelligence debate, plus a few lesser debates having to do with them being capstone predators.

A cow has a gestation period of about nine months or sometimes even a little longer. Therefore, they cannot possibly have a calf every three to four months.
