Medals will be shined and sent out to all winners. Well done guys.

I will post full stats later this week. But a few questions, why did these maps win? Does having longer play time guarantee a win?

That is your opinion about your map?

Seems the rest of the public do not agree with you considering you got over half the vote.

I thought Kings Court 2 would be the big winner. I guess I forgot that a majority of players still prefer a more 'classic' sort of map. Of course, I don't mean that as a slight. Eurasia is a great map.

When you consider Eurasia had about 6 more months of play, Kings court 2, still in beta did bloody well to get the one win and the 4 second places. This was the one map that took Eurasia to the wire in a lot of the categories. Given more time, it may of won some more as well. It was also the only map in beta that took anything.

I voted Eurasia in some categories even though I've never actually played the large map, and strongly dislike the map maker, that says a lot about how good the map looks lol.

That's not true, they've had equal amount of play on the site.

Eurasia went live into BETA on 3 May 2012, and was officially quenched on 12 September 2012.

King's Court 2 went live into BETA on 16 April 2012 (17 days earlier than Eurasia) but hasn't yet been quenched because of the need to iron out game mechanics and stuff like that, which is understandable since it is a more complex map. It probably still had less games played on it in part due to its BETA tag, since many players stay away from such maps incase of gameplay changes midway.

King's Court 2 is definitely an excellent map, but like what ViperOverLord mentioned, 'classic' gameplay is ultimately more popular than the complex ones, so I don't think the results would have changed much. That said, the complex maps definitely add much variety in gameplay and strategies into the site, and are very much integral to the entertainment factors of the site (:

Congratulations to all winners and mapmakers, and thanks for giving us so many choices to play on!

Your right anamainiacks, it just seems to of been on longer. But it has had far more games than KC2 which proves vipers point even more.

Ok, I sorted the maps based on how many awards they won and some arbitrary point system. If you want to rank them in your own way (say, by counting ties as full score, or by reducing the best new mapmaker award) you can. As expected, Eurasia and KCII were neck and neck. Not counting the Map of the Year Award, Eurasia Mini was only 1 point behind KCII though. DoomYoshi Nominees Africa II and Island of Doom didn't get any awards. KCII was not nominated for a Yoshi, namely because I don't like it that much. I expect Baltic to crush every category next year (except Big Game maybe).

Total Awards Score (Third Place counts 2 points, Second Place Counts 4 Points, First Place Counts 6, a tie counts -1 points)
Eurasia 25(5/4/0/1) 1st Place, Best Large Game Map; 1st Place, Team Game Map; 1st Place, Graphics; 3rd Place Tie, Gameplay; 1st Place, Best Map
King's Court II 21(5/1/4/0) 2nd Place, Best Large Game Map; 2nd Place, Team Game Map; 2nd Place Tie, Graphics; 1st Place, Gameplay; 2nd Place, Best Map
Eurasia Mini 16 (3/2/1/0) First Place, Best Small Game Map; Second Place, Best map for 1v1;1st Place, Ease of Use
Knights 15(3/2/1/0)Second Place, Best Small Game Map; First Place, Best map for 1v1; 1st Place Tie, Most Original
Dark Continent 9 (4/0/2/2) Third Place Tie, Best Small Game Map; 2nd Place Tie, Graphics; 2nd Place Tie, Gameplay; 3rd Place, Best Map
Salem's Switch 8(2/1/1/0) 2nd Place Tie, Gameplay; 1st Place Tie, Most Original
Trench Warfare 7 (4/0/0/4) Third Place, Best map for 1v1; Third Place, Best Large Game Map; 3rd Place, Team Game Map; 3rd Place Tie, Most Original
Cuban Missile Crisis, 7(2/1/0/1) 3rd Place Tie, Most Original; 1st Place, Best New Mapmaker

Here is the run down of the percentages for each category.
show: small game map

show: 1v1 map

show: large game map

show: team game

show: best graphics

show: best gameplay

show: most original map

show: best of 2012

I think having the full percentages will show us a lot more.

I'm surprised at how few votes Africa II got. I remember voting for it in some category. (but not which)

The votes cast differed from category to category. Overall I had 97 who went to vote. This may seem a small number, but 97 people looking at something done in the foundry is pretty damn good.

Not too shabby actually. Might've had something to do with that it was linked to from outside the foundry I suspect.

Two things made me happy about this number, the first is the amount who did vote, the second one is less than 100. The reason for that is my plan with survey monkey only allows 100 votes per poll. So I would of had to set up another one and sort all of the links out with another 3 votes.

I am just surprised that no category got all of the votes cast.

The one thing that I will take away from this is that players want to have a root of standard game play, but are more focused on having something different. Just look at the top 3 in gameplay, none have a standard gameplay and Eurasia only placed forth.
Maps that are small are good for small games, but large maps can be played 1v1 as good if not better. I am also surprised by Africa 2 lack of votes. Some things that did not surprise me was the lack of votes for some maps, but the two from DiM last year got very few apart from Patch in original map.

Well when the category is voting for the map with the "Best Gameplay", naturally the voting population will be looking for something different and innovative. It would be rather silly to award a "Best Gameplay" to a map with standard gameplay, no? :P

But yes, I too am surprised about not all categories receiving the full voting number. I thought once you're there, you might as well fill in the whole form? :P

That is the thing that I keep hearing. Players are happy when new maps come out but unless it really is something special, it will get overlooked quickly. Out of last years maps, I very much doubt more than 3 or 4 will become classic maps for play. The rest are more than likely to be played, but no more or less than the rest of the maps.

Eurasia will probably take over World 2.1s spot as a great 8 player map and this is something we are missing a lot of. Large maps that allow for great standard 8 player games. I would not mind if a few more like this one where made.

For me, at this point there are A LOT of maps and I'm used to play a lot of the oldies and find myself not really playing new maps a lot (though I play every map at least once).

As far as "classic" maps, I'll be creating 1982 games regularly.

Yeah, see Knights is another fun one. But I always find myself in tournament games and don't create my own very often, and tournament games don't *usually* include brand new maps.
