That is the only way. But Classic is the most popular in games played. World 2.1 is the most popular according to the 200 map celebrations.

Coleman did this a couple of years ago so slightly out of date but worth a look anyway.

baltic is a hit. I didn't need an updated list to tell you that though. Give it some time out of Beta, I bet it finds its way to the top 20 if not 10. I am actually surprised how well Arms Race is holding though. I don't find myself in Arms Race games as often anymore.

Also, supermax is 54 in 200, so not as unpopular as I thought. Crossword is waaay down there.

baltic have 145 active games,, we will see how many will have when he go out of beta.
arms race have 144 active games ,what its stable middle.

I don't fully agree because active games are subject to options, so an old no-spoils-adjacent game could be still active but it could be also on a map that nowdays is no longer played so much.
To collect precise values we should have a time stamp available (via API or whatever) for started games, so we can be able to collect the number of games started in every month/day/year.

Yes, exactly.
Active games mean nothing without take into consideration settings and map structure.
The hive, for example, is 350 regions, doodle earth is 18, but only a fool can think that the former is more popular than the latter.
Just the games on hive take more than on doodle due the size of the map.
Active games don't prove anything about popularity.

Popularity is games started x days...but afaik can't be done.
