Adjust Speed Turn Times to Match Internet Speed

Postby Funkyterrance on Mon Mar 25, 2013 11:43 pm

*

A patch that causes a players turn to be extended based on his/her internet connection speed

Specifics/Details:
This would probably get pretty technical...
It would have to be a program that calculated and adjusted according only to the communication times and not idle times. I'm sure it's possible, just not sure how practical/labor intensive.

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:

This will create a more even playing field for short-timed speed games and allow all users to enjoy this option. Players will be able to tell who's brain is faster and not necessarily just whose internet is faster.

You would calculate ping times, but they are variable from one minute to the next. So you would have to calculate a ping test at the beginning of every turn. I could throttle down my internet (or just flick it off) for the first 30 seconds, get the extra time and they play normally.

Yeah but doesn't the fact that I said it would only adjust communication time negate what you wrote? It wouldn't make sense to throttle down your internet while communicating would it? I'm saying your ping is only measured and turn adjusted according to the times that you communicate with the server. I dunno, I'm not that wise to the tech so someone who knows would have to do the real thinking on this one. I'm assuming people know what I mean.

I think this is a bad idea. People need to know what kind of game they are getting into. They don't want to have to wait forever because someone has slow internet.

There was an online game I used to play that had a standard 8-second delay for all actions. It created a level playing field. Rather than trying to measure how fast anybody's ping is, there could just be a delay built in which covers most people's speed.

Adding a delay like that might make 1 or 2 minute games (more) unplayable.

This seems like a much better scenario than one player having lighting fast internet and the other having super slow.

It would also ruin all fs speed games.
If you give a player extra time if they have a bad connection in a fs speed game, could their turn last longer than an opponents? That could be a huge advantage.
And if you just add in a delay, fs speed games become obsolete-there's no speed component.

Yeah but it's not an advantage really since this is meant to adjust so that each player's connection is actually equal. If anything the advantage lies in the current situation where one player has a faster connection.
One of the main reasons people don't play freestyle is the uneven playing field so this suggestion would probably draw a lot more people into those games.

I think that solution can work in a game like Chess, where one move happens per turn, but it's not as great for a multiple move game. Especially freestyle.

sequential speed this might work but i wouldn't want it.

if i join a 1 min speed game i expect to be round 5 in a few minutes. not 20 because they have dialup.

Yeah this probably would be most appropriate for sequential speeders.
Thing is, I don't think the game would be extended all that much, probably only by a few seconds per turn in most cases.

i use to play texas on pokerstars. my connection was always dropping out. pokerstars would add time to your turn - lots of time if the stakes were high.

what i'm getting at is a super slow connection like what i had which was also prone to dropouts would deliver zero pings. this would add massive amounts of time to every turn.
