Current population is

22,999,974
This projection is based on the estimated resident population at 30 September 2012 and assumes growth since then of:
one birth every 1 minute and 44 seconds,
one death every 3 minutes and 32 seconds ,
a net gain of one international migration every 2 minutes and 19 seconds (wow, the Kiwi's are coming over in droves), leading to
an overall total population increase of one person every 1 minute and 23 seconds .

NZ has a population clock too

http://www.stats.govt.nz/tools_and_services/tools/population_clock.aspx

currently at 4,464,870 (This figure excludes sheep and farmers wives (as most of them ARE in fact sheep))

one birth every 8 minutes and 13 seconds
one death every 18 minutes and 53 seconds
a net migration gain of one New Zealand resident every 126 minutes, and 32 seconds.

Yeah, lots of cheap land in the middle of the country, but most of us wouldn't want to live there

How much does land in the middle of Australia cost?

I may purchase some for the inevitable apocalypse (along with a tricked out car with machine guns and spikes on the wheels).

cheap block of land $4,200 but I have seen cheaper out here, I have seen land sell for under $1000

The machine guns might be an issue though with Australia's strict gun laws.
We don't have the right to bear arms like our brothers in the USA, as our only bears are koala bears (and they are really not bears, they are marsupials).
And as for the car.. Fuel out here is $1.60 per litre .. (about $6.50 for a US Gallon)

Hmm...

Road Warrior and Mad Max. Watch them.

But thanks for the tips on the land. I would love to own some wide open spaces, although I have to figure out how to get a gun into Australia.

You may want to reconsider the value of a land deed, in a post-apocalyptic scenario.

Then there's Beyond Thunderdome :) Seen them all, and they are making another.

There are ways of getting guns into the country legally, as there is no law prohibiting you owning gun parts, including all the parts of any gun.

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, oi, oi , oi. Yes I'm from the land down under, currently residing in China. Proud that we have reached the 23 million mark. China on the other hand has a city which is bigger in population than all of Australia ;)

But India will soon rein supreme, it's population will take over China soon..WOW 8-[

Only 23 million? In another game I play often, that would barely qualify as a Newb. You call that a nation? This is a nation!

The Nifty Republic of Tzorsland is a gargantuan, socially progressive nation, ruled by The Master with an even hand, and renowned for its anti-smoking policies. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 19.516 billion are either ruled by a sleek, efficient government or a conglomerate of multinational corporations; it's difficult to tell which.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt, pro-business government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Defence, Law & Order, and Education. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Eyesore. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Information Technology, Uranium Mining, and Woodchip Exports industries.

Cars speed down national highways while drivers sleep at the wheel, the CEO of Laws Incorporated must sign off on all new bills, all tariffs have been abolished, and mining is the nation's most dangerous occupation. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Tzorsland's national animal is the wild turkey, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, its national religion is The Eye of Harmony Cult, and its currency is the Tzor.

Tzorsland is ranked 9th in The Pleiades and 11,653rd in the world for Safest, scoring 269.2 on the Bubble-Rapp Safety Rating.

But in the real world; you do realize that the "State" of California still out ranks you at 37 Million; Texas has 25 Million.

Isn't the middle of Australia, like, ungodly hot? Plus there'd be little protection from nuclear fallout in the event of a post-apocalyptic scenario. You run to the hills. Easier to defend, greater protection and room to hide.

Get it together, greekdog.
