No, the " Gaul " we're seen as barbarians, an enemy of rome, the people of rome and rome itself was much more civilized.
The Gaul we're well know for there metalworking and extensive trade.

1st nice drawing waauw,
I can't wait to start playing this one.

it's called "Conquer Gaul", they are the ones who conquered it :P

Also the romans used to hate the gaelic folk. At the foundation of Rome, they used to come down from the north and raid Rome.

Have you never seen asterix comic books/ films?? Maybe it was ironical i don t know.

Anyway, personally wow i think it s a good idea but i m not a great fan of the graphics so far, i think there are too many details in the background and it s difficult to read.

Are all those village names true? Wasn t paris lutecia?

Gaul is a collection name of many independent tribes. Generally it is accepted that it existed out of different parts:
  • blue: Belgica
  • pink and green: Lugdunensis
  • orange: Helvetica
  • cyan: Aquitania
  • yellow: Narbonensis
  • Purple: Cisalpina
==> This is old Gaul, Julius Caesar only started invading Gaul once Cisalpina and Narbonensis were already part of the roman empire.

the gauls also used to fight the germanic tribes often(not sure about the hispanic tribes)
The Helvetica tribe for example was once invaded from the north and driven out of it's lands. They went on a walk-about in search for a new land until Julius Ceasar drove 'm back to their homeland.

so do we play the Romans and try to Conquer Gaul before the other Romans do or is this a standard map like France where we are distributed randomly within the region ?

Initially I didn't plan on integrating Rome into it, but I needed an extra starting point.
As for the starting positions, everybody starts with a capital and for the rest everybody will get randomly distributed territories all over the map. Though tech, cattle, battlesites and mines will start neutral for sure. Other territories I will still have to analyze how to equilibrate starting positions.

some adjustments I might make:
  • add a foreign invasion system(similar to Conquer Rome)
  • Remove Rome as starting position and make one in Pictones(northern Aquitania)
  • shorten names so they fit in the boxes
  • Re-draw territory borderlines to make 'm more pretty
  • shuffle around with the cattle and mines
  • maybe adjust some tech-options

All of the names are real, though some might be a little off position. Also Lutetia is a city not a tribe(collection of towns= mini nation).
The same goes for example for Massilia(Marseille).
I'll try to fix background :)

made some changes:
  • I got rid of the snowy tops of the mountains
  • Blurred the background a bit for less detail
  • Shortened some territory names so it's readable
  • moved some items around within territory to make it more orderly
  • added couple of cattle and mines to even up balance a bit
  • redrew some border lines, so they look a bit less messy(though still not sure how to draw decent lines in GIMP)
  • made coastlines and riverbeds a bit darker
  • changed some bonuses

Remark: I'll probably change the agriculture bonus as it is sometimes too unclear what territory borders 2 rivers

the first thing that comes to mind looking at your map is this old EvilDIMwit map project.
It was a great idea, maybe you can find something you can give you some additional inspiration viewtopic.php?f=242&t=113230

P.s. don't go with both versions, you don't need for now...use the large.

Finally, I'm moving your map into the drafting room considering that it seems to me that it shows all the elements required. ;)

I just read the mapmakers manual, and saw I need to show my to do-list.
my current concerns I'm planning on working on:
  • Some parts of the map are still too bright, need to darken 'm
  • Find a solution for the agriculture tech bonus
  • Find a way to make borderlines blend in better

anybody else got any remarks I should add to my to do-list?

Another few changes:
  • Adjusted some colouring
  • added treelines to seperate some areas from attacking each other
  • made the Rau. area pink instead of blue to make it more compatible to bonus areas
  • adjusted some descriptions

also decided to leave the borderlines as is for the moment, as I prefer not drawing fat lines.

to do list: decide what to do with the agricultural bonus and the housing bonus

this is a good idea. if this is to be a map of Gaul then make it of Gaul.

Made some pretty big changes:
  • made new boxes for better look
  • got rid of Rome and divided Aquitania in 2 parts
  • changed 'tribe tech advances'
  • added tech features to each territory
  • added victory conditions

what do you guys think? This should make the map gameplay a lot more complex I think.

Another revision, changes:
  • auxiliairies changed

  • cleaned up some sloppy work along coastlines and banners

  • changed some explanations
  • changed explanation of map!
  • redrew border lines
  • Got rid of Corsica so I could write the full names of the different Gaelic provinces.

Interesting map... in the South get rid of that 4 way connection.

I also would change out that water. Try something more blue...

The rivers look to large to me. Try to thin them out.

Good luck!
