If you clean up the wood it could look nice. Also your rivers look very choppy. Maybe you can redraw those, or smooth them out.

Your bonus borders... the darker lines are also choppy. Try smoothing those out. Cleaner is better. :)

I also agree that the wood looks the best if its cleaned up a bit!! The battle markers look a bit fuzzy as well as the tree/hedge borders

will work on the wood tomorrow. making decent shadows to try and create some perspective is harder than it seemed at first.
And about the battle markers, they are vague cuz they are so small. Prettylooking pics at pictogramsize are a thoughy. But if you want I can try something else like a roman shield or a helmet. but that'll be for tomorrow too.

Lastly the hedges, I'll try and see whether I can make some hills/mountains, maybe that'll look better. It might fit better in the Alps anyway.

well if he offers to help, I have no problem with it.
But I'm not gonna disturb him myself. I'm sure he's got plenty to do already.

Here's some changes I made meanwhile:
  • smoothed out some borders and some rivers
  • tried to change the wood a bit

still have to see if I can find something different as a battle-icon and need to draw some mountains and redraw the trees. But what do you think of the wood now?

It is still overlapping in the middle. Can you not shorten the small lat of wood so it does stick out next to e-gaul?

The boxes with letters on the right if the unit rectangles might be better on the left as the unit numbers will run off the right side in games with where units grow above 3 digits. That does happen more often than you might think.

Overall love the concept for this map and look forward to playing it.

I like the updates you have done. The helmets look a lot better as well as using mountains instead of hedges for impassable borders.

The bridge above Aduatuca is off as its not crossing the river.

i thought the scrolls looked better than the wood. i am seeing a map in a wooden frame, with scrolls of additional info unfurled on it.

my impression of the Roman times was info was contained in scrolls, not stacked in bulky wooden frames. ;)

Want to keep it Roman'esk - then veto the wood and use columns and stone work...

why would a map be framed by stone?

This is what I meant by being frames in stone - to me it feels more like roman then wood.
This is just a rough example..
