Our Story starts in 2006, when Thaksin Shinawatra was overthrown by the military and exiled from the country. In 2007, a new Democratic election was held. In 2008, the next prime minister was ousted. His successor lasted for a few months before his entire party was dissolved by the courts. After years of violent protests, Yingluck Shinawatra took over office in July 2011. You may recognize her last name. Indeed she is the younger sister of the man with whom we began our story.

Controversy has never really ended in this politically unstable kingdom. When Yingluck passed legislature to allow her brother to return back to Thailand, a zany wave of protests began. As I write this, Bangkok is under a state of emergency. There are new elections scheduled for February 2, 2013. We are unsure if they will even happen on schedule, as some are suggesting they be delayed.

There are 53 Parties contesting 125 seats! There are protestors lobbing grenades at police, a strong military and judicial system, weak government and a king. We are going to capture this swirling mess in one game.

As there are only 4 Parties with a candidate in all 125 ridings, they will be 4-player games. To fully experience the rush, the settings are set to fray your nerves.

NO SIGN-UPS REQUIRED - Everyone is eligible!
All you need to do is play in at least one game started between February 1 and February 28 with the following settings:

Settings
Map: Thailand
Players per game: 4
Game Type: Standard
Initial Troops: Automatic OR Manual
Play Order: Freestyle
Spoils: Escalating, Nuclear or Zombie
Reinforcements: Parachute or Unlimited
Special Gameplay: MUST HAVE FOG; Trench is optional
Round Length: Casual or speed

Medal Criteria
You need at least 12 points.
Points are scored according to the following criteria:
Joining a game, 1 point
Winning a game, 3 additional points

The settings that must be present are Thailand, 4 Players Standard, Fog, Freestyle

Please double check and make sure you have all these settings set.
Settings not allowed are No Spoils, Flat Rate, Chained, Adjacent, No Reinforcements
The other settings are open. Round Limits are not mandatory, but are recommended to make sure all games finish on time.

Games can finish up to one week after the end of the month.

Notes

I (DoomYoshi) would like to note that I am not attempting to trivialize the very real problems Thailand is facing today. In the United States and Canada we are blessed to have a stable government. Even Mexico is doing better now with their new handsome president. I am hoping that by featuring this issue, it will help to bring awareness but in a fun way. It bothers me that even today there are countries that can't do an election correctly. Madagascar, China, Turkey... the problem is global.

Who can play a Challenge?
All challenges are open to everyone, although freemiums may have a problem meeting the game load.

How do we join?
All you have to do is a)create games that meet the requirements or b)join games that meet the requirements. They can be private or public games. Team CC is not creating any games, the whole thing is done by users. There is a game-join link at the top of the first post.

What is the prize?
One of the rarest medals on the site, the Challenge medal. Challenges only come around once, if you miss it, you won't ever have another chance.

When do I get my prize?
Usually, a week after the month of the challenge, but for longer challenges it may take quite some time.

Why do we get points just for participating?
The main reason is to give everyone a chance. If you see the challenge is a game-type you hate, you might still be able to win. Also, to ensure there are lots of games. I try to gauge how difficult and restrictive the settings are to the average user, and I build the challenge around that concept. Insanely hard settings will be 10 games, easy or standard settings might require 20 or 30 while open-settings could require as many as 50!

Do games have to finish by the deadline to receive the 1 point for joining them?
Yes, unless that point would give you the medal.

i.e. a player already has the medal, has 4 ongoing games, no score for those ongoing games
a player doesn't have the medal, not enough ongoing games to get the medal, no score for those ongoing games
a player doesn't have the medal, but has enough ongoing games to get the medal, those ongoing games are scored.

FAQS and Rulings
1. Deadbeats (missing 3 turns) disqualifies a player from getting a join point in that game.
2. Tournament Games do not count
3. Wins by round limit count as normal wins.
4. Games can always have round limits but they never need to.

Yeah, a flipping challenge medal! You just have to meet the medal criteria in the OP.

So by simply joining 12 games you have yourself a medal?

I moved it to make it more prominent, so hopefully it works now.

Yes, but you can't deadbeat the games.

Second post has been updated with a FAQ. I'm looking for pointers on how I can make that post as clear as possible, so give me some advice... or if there are questions I missed.

Looks like you were looking for the old Official Tournament colours. Congrats on picking BD0060, damn good approximation. I would never have gotten that close by eye. If you really want to be spot-on, it's BD0052.

I really like this thread, in particular, the first couple of posts. You appear to be defining a standard.

But, I have one more suggestion for you to consider:

Although it is February, I'm still very interested in the January Challenge. Sometimes I want to go back and reread the scoring rules without navigating through the forum hierarchy. Would you consider putting a link to the January thread (or in future, any thread for active challenges)? Call me lazy or impatient, but it seems the times I'm most interested in rereading the rules are the same times that the server takes several minutes to give me a page.

My only clarification comment is, you post "please double check and make sure you HAVE all these settings" right after the settings that aren't allowed. Perhaps a little re arranging would make things clearer. I knew what you meant, but someone not paying as much attention might get messed up a bit.

We're not even an hour into the election and already nobody has any idea what is going on. Some polling stations have closed and there have been gun duels in the streets of Bangkok.

lol at watching reporters wearing heavy armor. I just spend 4 days in Bangkok, returned home today, and it's not that bad. Yes you hear "gunshots" around several times a day, but now is chinese new year, so I bet what most reporters talk about they hear, is just firecrackers that make a pretty loud sound.

And yes there are very sporadic real trouble, but we are talking about a city with 15 mio people, and I bet that a lot fewer people die in Bangkok these days because theres a lot less traffic than normal :D
