Ragnarök (Updated Midgard Pg 9) [Abandoned]

Postby Telvannia on Wed Jun 27, 2007 3:15 am

Ragnarök is a big battle between all the inhabitance of Norse mythology, which ends in the end of the world in Norse mythology. My map idea would cover the time before Ragnarök and then Ragnarök itself.
This is currently not possible with current XML functions but im hoping that by the time i finish the map it will be possible. (this is highly likely considering that i have worked on this map for about a month so far and done an eighth, you will see why later)

Before Ragnarök
Players would fight to control the 9 worlds of Norse mythology (but there will only be 8 bonuses because two of the worlds are the same with different names).
Then there would be some events that would signal the lead up to Ragnarök:
    1. The birth of three beings — the offspring of Loki and Angerboda, namely Jörmungandr, Fenrir and Hel and the gods' subsequent actions to confine them;
    2. The death of Baldr and the binding of Loki;
    3. The arrival of Fimbulwinter.
To show these i will:
    1. Give a bonus of armies to whoever holds the territories containing Loki
    2. the removal of Baldrs and Lokis territories.
    3. The map will change to add loads of ice to block many attacks routes.

Ragnarök
The map will change at a certain turn, (it is still to be decided which).
All the continents of the old map will only be represented by 1 territory, and whoever had the largest force there at the end of the turns will keep his majority on the territory, player will no longer get any bonuses or armies.
The middle of the map will be one big neutral countries, subdivided in to many territories, to represent the plains of Vigrid (where the battle takes place.)
To win the game they have to either control Vigrid or kill everyone else.

Sorry about the length of this, probably did not make much sense!

Thanks for your time.

by the way, i have approval from lack :P

way too early to comment on the actual map of course..
but I like the idea.

regarding the names I think you should be consistent:

either use the modern scandinavian (Denmark, Norway, Sweden) names or the ancient Icelandic (by Snorre for example) - the latter is generally considered to be more historically correct.

Vigrid should be Vigridr in ancient icelandic and it is one single field (shaped as a square btw) located on an island.

Fenrisulvr got tricked and tied up on another smaller island called Lyngvi - located in the ocean of Amsvartnir.

When ragnarök happens all the dark powers come to Vigridr (from the east) with a ship called Naglfar/Nagelfar made entirely out of dead people´s fingernails.

Please don´t make large plains on a mainland as that wouldn´t have anything to do with the actual myth. The final fight definitely takes place on an island.

Valhall/Valhalla/Valhöll looks a bit small imo -
It´s supposed to have 540 doors and each one of those doors have 800 warriors..

Im using information from wikipedia to name the places, and for information about the map.

I know but it is hard to have a big Valhalla without using too much space up.

Two cents.

1. The idea is great. If you can do it, it has the potential to be a great map/game.

2. But trust the West Norse people here, not Wikipedia when it comes to names etc. :D

I might change my map to look a bit like yours, because i think working in 3D does not really work when im drawing it with gimp.
I will see what i can come up with, might post something later.

ill create a tutorial for you to show you what i done.

But i used photoshop so u may not get the same filters as on gimp.

but basically

-have a blank layer filled with teh green you desire
-have another layer black(greyscale) and white set the layer mode to multiple
-play around will a noise filter on the black and white layer until you get the desired affect.
-then take youe paintbrush and a new layer set the opacity to around 12-16percent and use black put the black where u desire the likes of hills etc If it isnt dark enuff jsut add a little more of teh black
-use the smudge on the black paint to create a shadow hill like effect.
-do the same with brown on a new layer to get a mud effect

I don´t think the names are a huge issue.. it´s been 1000-1500 years after all..
Having wiki as a source explains the inconsistencies, but we Norse don´t know how the names should be spelled in the latin alphabet anyway.. didn´t use that until christianity came.

I´m a swede (norwegian by blood only) but I think you probably should listen primarily to Norwegian and Icelanders when it comes to proper names
out of the norse the swedes have changed their language the most..

sure it will sort itself out eventually when other scandinavian CC countries have had their say.

I might post in the norwegian forum to see what they say.

How did you make such a nice Grass texture? Im using Gimp for my map as well, and its tough going because im just starting to use it. I also like the shading. I hope you don't run out of motivation, because the stuff you have so far looks really good.

This was my go at making a thatch feel. Take this and play around with it until it looks good for your map.
I started off with the Pine Pattern:
Image

Then I Filter > Distort > Mosaic. In the Mosaic table I left every thing as the way it was except for Tile Neatness, which i put to .70.
Image

Then I Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. I put the angle to 315 to get the direction of the blur and i put the Length in between 100-125.
Image

Then I Filter > Blur > Pixelize. I put the size of the pixels to 10 in each category.
Image

Then I Filter > Artistic > Apply Canvas. I put the direction to Bottom left and put the deepness to 9.
Image

Then I Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. With the same angle of 315 and the length all the way up
Image

Then I Filter > Noise > Scatter RGB.... I Put all 3 colors at .08.
Image

Then I Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. With the same angle of 315 and the length all the way up.
Image

Finally, I Filter > Noise > Scatter RGB.... I Put all 3 colors at .08.
Image

This isn't quite a thatch, but if you play around with the colors you should get a pretty realistic thatch. You should also be able to work with those 5 basic filters to get your own thatch.

the grass was nicked from a different picture.
but the picture was a 3D rendered one, so it fitted into my map.

thanks for the method to make thatch, i will see what i can do with it.

i personally prefer the overhead one, the 3D ones takes ages to draw, it took me a month to do just Asgard, and that is only 1/8 only thing is it is easier to show the different worlds with a 3D one.

when i get to the same point on both i will put a poll on it and see what most people think.

(mind you im not much of a democrat)

the path needs to be blurred a bit.

the buildings are quite pixelated because of the rotating, it was either that or them looking really blurred.
