Spaceness Map(v0.9 BETA, page 15) [vacation]

Postby bloknayrb on Wed Oct 17, 2007 3:33 pm

Here is a map my friend and I are working on... Any suggestions are welcome.

Territories: 41
Bonuses: 6
Map Includes: One way attacks, Bombardments

The map has six "continents" and a total of about 40 territories.
What makes this map crazy is that while the "shapenesses" can attack the planets, the "shapenesses" themselves can only be attacked from "The Buckle." However, each planet has one territory capable of bombarding one shapeness that is connected to a different planet, promoting crazy temporary alliances and more interesting team dynamics.

All new maps start in Map Ideas so you'll need to be there for a bit. I've moved you.

Is this picture original artwork or was it taken from something else?

sun is way too glaringly big and hurts the hell out of my eyes.

what are those screw thingies suppose to be?

there seems to be some kind of pixilated thin white line around ur planets. might wanna fix that.

ur asteroid field along the attack lines needs work. looks like spots that dont really work well with the rest of ur map.

u should make all ur screw thingies the same size.

overall, its looks okay, but its no where near the solar system map or the galactic conquest map standards yet.

keep at it, and maybe we will get another quality space map.

I agree, the sun, although realistic, looks a bit too glarey.

I really, really like the graphics for the planets. Don't change 'em.
That said, the region division lines look a bit shody. Do change them.

Although I like the idea of your station/ship things, they're a bit too cartoony to fit in with the rest of the map.

I really like the overall feel of the map, just some of the details need to be changed.

P.S. Why are there so many space maps now? There was just Space for quite a while, then Solar System and Galactic War, and now this one all popped up at almost the same time.

Yeah, it kind of looks like the planets were just cut and pasted out of somewhere. No offense if you made them, but the white lines around some of them look a little suspicious.

Thanks for the input everyone, I'll try to work on it.

All of the artwork is by me (am I supposed to provide proof?), the white outlines are because I didn't notice them until after I had already flattened the layers into one image, but I can still fix it.

The A2 thing in the corner is a signature, I'll make that more clear in the next version.

jako, that is the best avatar ever.

The little screw-like thingies are a random shape I drew that I guess doesn't really fit... I guess I'll replace them with wormholes or something.

I wasn't actually aware that there was more than one space-themed map out there... This is the style of stuff I usually do, so I decided to go with it.

Does anyone have any specific advice regarding the lines dividing the territories on the planets?

thx man. i liek it too.

u really need to organize that saturn-like planet area.

its very confusing as what is bordering what.

is this map designed to be a small tert map?

u need to reposition some of ur tert borders like on teh second smallest map and the jupiter sized planet. u have 2 tiny little terts tucked in the edge of the map. not a good idea.

can u also make up some planetary names as its hard to refer to specific planets when commenting on ur map.

the saturn in ur legend shouldnt be extending over teh legend boundaries if u have all that space left over.

u need to move the screw thingy in the bottom centre spot near the legend up a bit as it seems to go off the map.

u should try to keep all teh planets and stuff in the map rather than have stuff extending off the map. it kinda ruins teh map if u do that a lot. and trust me, u do that a lot on this map.

other than that, ur graphics seem really good. sorta reminds me of the canada revamp that WM is doing.

at first i thought the same but then i looked and saw his name isnt A2 and i also didn't find any player with this name.

but as it seems it really is a signature.

Ok, here's a reworking based on some of the tips you guys gave me:

Whats a tert map?

Also, the A2 symbol is... a little retarded. I made it as a logo for a website I'm working on and I liked it, so I'm using it in random places, but I'm going to replace it with something else before the final version of this map, because it doesn't actually represent me in any obvious way... Try not to make too much fun of me in that regard.

EDIT: Got rid of A2

tert = territory

So the question was:

Is this map being designed to only have a small number of territories?

Is 39 a small number of territories? I mean, its only 3 less than the standard Risk (c) map, right?

Yes.

If you listed tow as a border for stubb but not the other way around then Tow could attack (or fortify to) stubb but stubb could not attack (or fortify to) tow.

Sweet. That's how 1-way borders are established. I bet the first time someone made one was through an accidental omission *lol*
[/XML Comment]

Back to the topic at hand. The new update looks pretty decent. Those flying jellyfish with corkscrew tails might actually need to be bigger (to hold the army numbers [circles?]).

With the darkness of space, the planets need just a little brightening - mainly so people can see the features. I realize we are on the dark side of this particular solar system (pretend it's a two star system?).

I would suggest a different color for the terr borders on the rings (since they overlap the planetary terr borders).

The planetary terr borders that are on the sunny side of their planets need to be made crisper and more defined (they fade too much).

It takes a very very close look at the legend to realize that Pheris is the planet on the bottom left and Omicron the upper right. This could definitely stand some sharpening up.

The attack path between Eef and Satt needs to be made more distinguishable - right now it's too close to the border of Satt and Urnn. Same with Mu/Ness2.

Here are links to WidowMaker's Continent Bonus spreadsheet and Cairnswk's Continent Bonus Spreadsheet

Both in the Map Making Tools (stickied at the top of the Map Foundry forum) thread. Not sure if Coleman uses one of these or if he has his own.

39 terrs isn't exactly small. It's pretty much medium. A lot of the maps being made are large (60+ terrs) or mega (90+) terrs.

Excellent work so far.

Ok, so I've made some fixes, clarified some bits. I can't make the dark sides lighter because I already flattened the PSD's, but even if I hadn't, I'm kind of a stickler for realism, and when I tried it out with lighter planetary shadows I didn't like the result at all. The reason the shapenesses are imbalanced in terms of bonuses is because each one is a border territory, and I feel that being able to hold all of them would be extremely difficult. Let me know if you see anything else that needs alteration:

EDIT: Now the shapenesses work very differently; only the buckle can attack the shapeness next to it, though all shapenesses can attack one another, their attacks on planets are one-way. However, each planet can bombard a shapeness near one other planet. I think that this can produce some interesting gameplay dynamics, especially in team games, and can cause interesting alliances in standard games. What do you all think?

Oh, I did it this way for realism, I hate the way it looks when there's a lightsource but no shadows.

Issues, gameplay anyways.

The Halo5 rings look aweful the way they stack. I suggest you make them like layers going outwards instead of split into fours. (how it is now) Either that or get rid of them as territories since in RL it wouldn't be that way.

I don't think mast should be able to bombard ness5.

Same goes for It and Ness 1, and Sigma.

Establish 1 way borders more, unclear ATM.

No need to say that the buckle offers no bonus. Clear enough.

Erch (the name) should be next to the army circle.

All in all, great map. Just a few things I don't like about it.
