Animated legends.

Postby koontz1973 on Sun Dec 09, 2012 11:47 pm

Would a legend that is animated ever be allowed? Have it on two layers only set at a fast enough rate so payers can read both during a turn clearly. We already have animated maps.

What would be the pros or cons for something like this?

More room for game play area which might cut down the need for super sized maps?
I think this is a really great idea if it is possible.
what maps are animated now?

conquerman is animated and arms race was going to be. One of the draw backs to those maps is the animation causing headaches but if the animation was set slow enough, say 1 frame for 30 seconds, that would be eliminated.

this is not bad idea. it has much more positives as negatives. if I good understand the map will change with legend, yes? so the player will see map for 30 seconds and then legend for 30 seconds?

No, the map will always stay, it will never change.

But lets say you have a map that has 2 different bonus types, you could have both without the need for two boxes. Or a box for bonuses and another for the rules. So it would come up like this.

so... but this sounds great. all legends could be reduced to their half. important for me, my legends are a little bigger

good idea.

Be careful with this idea, because I see at least 3 problems:

1. Many people dislike animated images
2. When images are uploaded they need to be compressed, so the animation would be lost. This means no compression must be applied = map size must be small.
3. Freestyle and speed games need you are quick so a 30 sec animation is not so good

I say to keep all the info displayed all time...it's much better for now.

Yeah, really.

Add an extra 50px to your image and get the whole text on it. I feel that part of the challenge/skill of producing maps is fitting the legend in properly.

An interesting idea, but I don't approve.

i am against animating the legends.

it would have to move pretty fast otherwise it would be useless in a speed game.

This. And the downside of that is that when it is pretty fast it's incredibly annoying and very distracting.

no problem. keep throwing your thoughts out there, we'll keep stomping on them for you
.

so instead of animating the legend what about animating part of the theme

at the start of your turn a dust storm swirled away 1 of your troops from the central locations of Dust Bowl.
this would happen at the start of everyone's turn, affecting only their territories. in freestyle all territories would be inpacted.

Good discussion - I liked the idea and then agreed with the concerns...

How about using a 'hover' instead of an animation?

This would stop 'headaches and distractions' but still provide extra information in less space.

(X-Raider doesn't like it but has an animated Avatar, hmmmm...)

A hover option requires to have 2 images, that is something i like, but it means change the game page structure.
In that case it would be easier to change the page totally (ehm ehm left sidebar), maybe make the legend floating and have an hide/show option for it.

I would to think that the real issue is to change the game page; it's not hard but it has a big and wide impact on the users of the site. It is one of those updates that doesn't require a great coding skill, but need a long and thoughtful discussion.

Honestly suggestions like this one have a so big impact on the site that they should be discussed in the suggestion forum properly, they are not a "only mapmakers" thing imo.

I don't understand the hover concept could you post an example.

Are you talking about a scrolling marquee?

No, but all it means is that if you move your cursor over a certain point on a map, the legend will appear. Whilst this is a nice option, it also goes against one of the points that nobodies made about the flashing legend that all info needs to be displayed at all times.
