Russia as one territory makes no sense either strategically, in terms of its real weight in Asia, nor in terms of gameplay. As it is, Russia represents 40 per cent of the map. To have that as one territory really doesnt work... I'n not saying it's not possible, but it doesn't make sense.

I've had this update for some time, although it definitely needs a lot more work yet!

I'm not convinced about breaking Russia up - I quite like it as one big territory (but that's just me, I guess).

I've added territory names, and started playing around with getting them to fit... it's definitely going to be a squeeze in some areas, but I'll work on that in due course.

The region groupings are still tentative, although for the most part I think they make sense how they are. Pakistan could easily be shifted into the Indian Subcontinent, and would probably make that a better bonus, although it would make the "Stans" a lot harder to hold.

Further thoughts?

I think that's crazy, no offense

I think having Pakistan as a part f the India bonus makes a lot of sense. Granted that would make the Stan's pretty hard to hold (unless you made Western China a territory *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge*)

Further thoughts?

Yeah, this should be in gameplay.

Maybe some impassables along the borders could help, the Taklamakan comes to mind.

It certainly isn't just you.

Moving Pakistan to the subcontinent won't make the Stans that much harder to hold -- you technically don't lose any border territories for the continent.

Maybe, since you've got a bunch of minor island chains, add the Ryukyu islands (or even just a connection) between Japan and Taiwan.

And perhaps you want to have a Caucasus insert over Europe rather than three lines like that.

How exactly do you plan to fit numbers on that tiny inset?

And I think if you expanded the inset to includes the Caucasus countries, things might work out better.

And Indonesia on the map should be labeled Celebes.

I think this map is going to be a lot tougher than Europa, but if anyone can do it its you.

It's Sulawesi now. And Burma is Myanmar.

Industrial Helix: How exactly do you plan to fit numbers on that tiny inset?
MrBenn: Well, I can start off by making that inset a bit bigger.. It's just there as a concept at the moment, but there's plenty of space to enlarge it.

Industrial Helix: I think if you expanded the inset to includes the Caucasus countries, things might work out better.
Evil DIMwit: perhaps you want to have a Caucasus insert over Europe rather than three lines like that.
MrBenn: I've a feeling there's going to be a number of insets on this map. I'd rather put Caucasus over Europe, as there's not quite enough space to add it to the exisiting inset.

Evil DIMwit: Maybe, since you've got a bunch of minor island chains, add the Ryukyu islands (or even just a connection) between Japan and Taiwan.
MrBenn: They were on the map at one point (I think?)

Industrial Helix: I think this map is going to be a lot tougher than Europa, but if anyone can do it its you.
MrBenn: Thanks for the vote of confidence. The trickiest thing is going to be to make things fit while keeping the shape recognisable Asia!

There's room to fit the words Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in Western China.

also I like the font you're using, what is it?

I've a feeling it's a bog standard Times New Roman.

Edit: I stand corrected, it's a typeface called 'Hoefler Text'

Having had a better look at placement of insets etc, it looks like I probably could squeeze in the Holy Land and Caucasus on top of the unplayable bit of Europe. This would then leave the bottom corner free for an inset of Bahrain, Qatar etc; it's going to be a real tight fit there!

I think I'll be able to get most of Indochina to fit, although may need to use a couple of abbreviations there, and I also expect I'll have to use abbreviations for Middle Asia (the Stans) too.

As for Russia and China, I'd much rather keep these as individual territories for each country - I only intend to add in extra territories for islands (as happened in Europa).

Does anybody have any good names for the map ('Asia' is already taken)??

Well, as others have said, i don't see how the gameplay will work with China and especially Russia as one territory each. Then again, you run this place so no need to listen even to your colleagues. Have fun with your project.

I think it might be pretty darned interesting to have these two highly connected, highly strategic territories. For example, China is part of the eastern group but it's very useful for holding the central or southeastern group. It's a unique strategic situation.

Names for the map:
  • Countries of Asia
  • Asian Countries
  • Asia Complete
  • Asian Politics
  • Politics of Asia
  • Asian Polities
  • Polities of Asia
I know these are not dazzling, but they are fairly accurate, and might spark some better ideas.

Is it possible to change the existing Asia maps name to "far east"? Failing that I suggest "Asis" or "Siana" Both ancient names for Asia.

Heh, no, existing maps can't be changed without mapmaker's permission.

I already spoke with lack, and he doesn;t want to rename the existing Asia map, even though I suggested that Asia: Far East would work nicely :P

Would Asiana work? It follows the Europa naming convention, even if it doesn't sound right.
Asiatica? It also doesn't quite sound right.

Yeah, no one ever actually calls it that.
How about "Greater Asia"? Doesn't really mean anything particular but people will know what it means.

Greater Asia sounds good.

Or how about Azio, the esperanto word for Asia ;)

Or how about simply Orient?

Or, Oriens, latin word for east.

I'm still in favor of Asiatica... I think it sounds nice and kind of fits with the Europa theme.

There's always Asia II

That's an adjective, is the problem. 'Europa' is the continent's name in Latin and various other languages, but its equivalent for Asia is 'Asia'.

How about 'Asia 2010'? Perhaps banking on some revolution or drastic political change some time within the next 17 months.

I'd steer away from Orientalism in general.

There aren't many good options---save perhaps something like this. Our current, old Asia map renamed to Asia: Far East. Then this map can be Asia: Something else. But even this idea, I'm not sure if it is a good one.
