So if you hold Dabulamanzi and all the territs for him outside of the 150 yard line you get a + 8. Hold the territs inside the 150 yard line as well, you get an additional +4. If you hold the 4 inside the 150 yard line only you can get + 2.

This has caused problems with players so needs to change. I hate neutrals, players hate decays.
So if we lose the decay completely and these troops can become normal deploy. I will set it up so the British front line troops can bombard any territ inside the 150 yard line. Wit the neutral being high, it stops the players taking them early so allowing players to get the small bonuses inside the 150 yard line.

I find nothing wrong with the present rules--it adds to the game play--I am the first to complain about unfair drops and not getting the start but that is part of the game

All chieftains can bombard British Commanders.
Chieftains go back to a neutral 3 with the +1 auto deploy.

New bonuses-can someone please make suggestions on these figures.

This would allow me to keep the feel of the game with all of the current elements but stop the farming. It will also alleviate the concerns of DiM of players getting large bonuses in the first round.

On the farming as I stated above -it is only the few players that play the manual freestyle and they can do that with many different maps--it is a product of the settings not the map game play--you cannot base how you make any map on manual freestyle or maps will cease to be made. The objective on this map was fine before it went to the 10 and 10 as it was used sometimes --when it was moved to 10 and 10 it was only used on mop up time and now it will never be used.


As for the competitive aspect of the map--going first is too big of an advantage most of the time-just dropping down the bonus should alleviate this in my opinion--I really like the map--not sure with the changes above I will feel the same way but we shall see.

I concur with HA.
In general there is no way to balance a map on all settings.
However adding 3 chieftans to the win condition should basicly sort the round 1 win out on most players safe for manual freestyle against first timers. it would also mean you hold most of the map anyways (more or less) so as a win condition thats good enough. ofcourse winconditions in most games are either not used or only when it is mopup time anyways. making them 20 instead of 10 will only mean they are never used at all.

i concur with HA's comments on the bonussess. big bonussess are not really what you want anyways. by definition the reward risk factor is usually paying off big time with little real risk. keep em small is better.

decay or revert to neutral. decay can have a wierd effect on several games depending on the drop. if nobody drops there, decay is never a problem. i do think reverting to neutrals might also fit into the concept, however then there are too many regions (it would be better to have neutrals and then make each of the area's much much larger so they can connect to more area's at the same time.. keeping them as it is will make this map wierd but not unplayable.

now a torally different though, what if you get bonussess on having the entire region(including the chief)? this should eliminate first drop go advantages to a more acceptable minimum, i hope. it that a suggestion you are looking for?

SirSebstar, that is great. Both HA and you concur on most.

So if I make the decay regions smaller by removing 4 of the territs.
Will merge Sanele and Bonginkosi, Thulani and Vusumuzi, Bandile and S'phamandla, Dingane and Kwanele. This would result in less neutrals being present in the game and as the river warrior bonus will be changed (see below) I can programme the positions to be any 4.
Keep the current bonus system but maybe have it at +2 for every 3 territs held.
Change WC to commanders and any 3 chieftains.
Revert the neutrals to previous amounts. Commanders at 10, Schiess at 1, chieftains at 4.
Change the river warriors to any 5 held for the same bonus.

This removes the freestyle, manual farming completely.
Lowers the bonuses to an amount that makes round one drops negligible.
Even when DiMs example happens. Again his example is for 1v1 games and as this is the biggest setting played, has to be taken into account but also, not be made the priority.

i think you got it all.
ha's thought of "if you hold three you get a 1 bonus--four you get a 2 and so on-" like in route 66 is also an option. i do think nobody drops on the chietan right?
even if you have a lucky drop someone should know to act against a captured chieftan...
now if only there was a way to bomb the chieftans, that would be great.......

Then, if I make the British front line a normal neutral of 3 with the ability to bombard the chieftains. Make Schiess a 5 neutral to counter the removal of the killer/lower neutrals at the front line. That takes care of that.

i think the WC could include just 2 chieftains. with 3 it might be too much for 6-8 player games and with 1 it might still encourage exploit by going for shaka.
i think 2 chiefs and 2 commanders is the perfect compromise that makes exploiting impossible and at the same time keeps the objective realistically achievable in games with more players.

Thanks DiM, as soon as nobodies has checked in tonight and given his thoughts, I will work the map and xml over to include all changes. As maps are not uploaded over the weekend, that gives me a couple of days to work and finalise all points.

Right now...
Winning condition is 2 commanders and any 2 chieftains.
Neutrals.
Commanders 12 (Slightly different from above)
Chieftains 4
Inside the outpost 1
Schiess 3 (again different from above)
Front line 3

The front line becomes a normal neutral with the ability to bombard the chieftains.
This stops the first go abality to grab a big bonus
Will merge Sanele and Bonginkosi, Thulani and Vusumuzi, Bandile and S'phamandla, Dingane and Kwanele.
Reducing the decay region will please players. With the positions changeing to any 4, I will take out the neutral 1 and make them all deployable again.
Bonuses stay the same as is apart from the river warriors. This will change to a +3 for any 5.
Keeps them relatively small.
Positions will stay as is but it will be changed to any 4. This will give more lee way over the 150 yard line.

I've read the above posts, honestly I don't have additional thoughts. The only thing i can say is that your final list of changes is worth a try.
On paper it seems a good way to try to solve, or at least to limit, the current problems we have with this map.

A thing I would like to say is that your map is not a so small, after applying the changes keep an eye also on team games to see if your changes will affect in a bad way those games. In fact all maps with a number of territories that is about 70, give in any case an advantage to the first player. Try to limit this advantage doesn't have to cause bad games for teams or multiplayers. What I really like to see solved with this map is the farming issue; when it stops to be a normal practice I'm fine with the map, even if it could give a small advantage to the first player. ;)

Said that go with the changes, once uploaded will see how the map plays.

I am up for anything that makes the map more competitive (again the easiest way is to limit the bonus)

On farming--to me it is not really farming to start a manual freestyle game and dominate it--it is a specialist thing --I have recently decided to learn freestyle and these guys have some extreme skills. That being said, they don't like to lose--I have been asked to not join some of their games as I do win at a decent rate. I had a three way game with this map freestyle and they guy really did a good job and knew what he was doing--I did not feel like I was farmed even though he was way better than me with the settings--what I felt like is I need to get better. Even though the games are ending in two or three rounds with these settings they are really fun.

To me farming is still more based on the rules of cc with the new recruits or inviting players at a disadvantage. Since you cannot invite in speed I don't see the farming aspect as part of speed.

Just my thoughts :)

I agree with HA.

CC has rules to deal with farming, and farming is defined as benefiting from playing against new recruits.

Even if you change this map so that it can't be "abused" in freestyle manual, there are tons of other maps that can be used to play against inexperienced players and "rob" their points. City mogul, Oasis, Waterloo... any complex map, really.

Thanks for all your thoughts guys, I will apply the changes to the map and xml over the weekend. DiM, the starts will stay the same but I hope the changes will make it harder for anyone to grab that early advantage. Lets hope this stops the farming and keeps the spirit of the map.

the biggest issue is not the actual farming but the way this farming is done. yes there are plenty of maps with non classic gameplay that allow farming but you can't get the objective in round 1 on any of them.
for example plenty of people farm in AoR2 but they can't get the sanctuary in round 1.
or they use third crusade, but again they can't get the objective in round 1.
in all farming maps the farmer uses his superior knowledge of the map and/or freestyle skills to actually become the bigger player. on roorke's drift the farming implies actually trashing your stack against the neutrals to get the objective and you win while being the smaller player.

Here is a summery of game play changes.

Neutral values.
Commanders 12
Front line 3 (now not killer)
Schiess 3
Chieftains 5
British front line can now bombard all chieftains.
The river warriors are now +3 for any 5.
All bonuses stay the same but with the loss of 4 territs, 2 iButhos have lost there upper bonuses.
The positions have been programmed as any 4. This stops the river bonus being dropped on round 1 and allows the 8 of the 12 decaying territs to be handed out in 1v1 games, the other 4 will be done on drop. I was never a fan of the neutral, even if it is a one.

I hope this takes care of the farming issue once and for all. But will keep an eye on the main culprits as soon as this goes live. If they keep there game rate up, will have another look at the neutrals.

Sorry I didn't post here since it's something that I'm still discussing with lackattack.
There's an issue with the update. But don't worry , there's nothing wrong on your part. The problem is that it's the first time we have an update in which the new files have less territories than the previous ones.
Although this could seems a not relevant thing, it could become a problem when you consider that in the current games there could be some players that currently hold those territories. If we upload the current file and the territories are held, what will happen to the troops?

Right now we're discussing about 2 possible ways to solve this thing:

1. Create a temporary xml in which the merged territories are still present on the map but they becomes killer neutrals that turn to 999 neutral troops, in this way the territories that need to be merged will become neutrals and they can be deleted easily after, let say, 48h uploading the final xml (and the new images)

2. Close the map, wait untill that the current ongoing games are completed and then upload the new files.

I'm more in favour of the second option, since it won't require a useless effort on your part and won't cause any loss of armies or any type of complaints from people (except for those who are playing the tournaments who have to wait for a while, but they are playing a beta tournament so it's at their risk afterall).

When we are sure about the best possible solution I'll come here to post again. ;)

Thanks for letting me know. Going with the second option is fairer to the players in the ongoing games but please do what you feel is the best for the site and the map.

i say close it and close it fast cause people are abusing this like there's no tomorrow :evil:

the fact that this has been allowed for so many months now makes my stomach ache.
for crying out loud there are people with THOUSANDS of points won only on 1v1 manual on this map. just look at the games and you'll see them.
heck even map makers started abusing this thing.

Ok, this is the plan to solve the issue:

We are going to close the map, when done King Achilles will post into all active games to explain what is happening.We will add a 20 round limit to all active games that are at round 15 or less to force them to end. Five days later, we add the 20 round limit to all the other games. That way everyone has at least 5 days to prepare for the end.
Once all games have ended, Lackattack will update the xml and the map will be unlocked again!

The Map has been locked to solve the issue. It will be unlocked again as soon as the new xml will be uploaded.
