Map Name: 2010 World Cup
Mapmaker(s): MrBenn
Number of Territories: 63
Description: This map was originally created for the Official 2010 CC World Cup Event - "A tournament involving a special, new, South Africa World Cup map featuring teams as territories with their groups as the bonus regions, including a special world cup territory in the middle of the map."
Players begin in the group stages; the playoffs all start neutral, with increasing neutrals towards the finals. Each team can play (attack) each other team in the same group, as well as the corresponding winner/runner-up space on the Round of 16. The winner/runner-up can also attack back to any team within the corresponding group. To win the game, you can either eliminate your target, eliminate all your opponents, or conquer and hold both the Finalist positions.
The original 2010 South Africa World Cup map has been revamped to reflect the teams and groupings for the 2014 Brazil World Cup; the gameplay remains unchanged.

Special Features: - Limited Edition Map - 2010 World Cup Event
- Starting Positions
- Victory Conditions
- Starting Neutrals
- Adjusted Starting troops

Would there be any appetite for a new version of this map for Brazil 2014?

I would have nothing against that.

Would it be possible to change the teams, but keep everything else about the map the same? Or would they have to be 2 separate maps?

just the names and images can be updated. i wouldn't make a new, separate map for it.

I don't think so. I think MrB was implying that he would do it himself?

for sure.
there's 2 months till the world cup starts.

announce the map contest today, give 3 weeks for people to prepare maps and enter the contest, give another 2 weeks for voting and then 3 more weeks for finetuning the winning map.

Updating the map to reflect the teams for Brazil would be pretty easy and shouldn't take too long.... I could do it in an evening.
I was half wondering whether a map with slightly different gameplay (and more than 8p) could be made to work... I have a couple of ideas for that, but wanted to see what people thought first...

well, we'd need 0 active games to add any new territories. I don't see how you could make it hold more than 8p without making it bigger, but i'd like to hear it.

I was asking if that was possible. Fantastic

I don't think there would be any new territories to add.

The thought for adding more players/terrs would obviously have to be a different map with different gameplay (with conditional borders from group stage to knockout rounds, for example). I've had a thought for using FIFA confederations to allow more players at an earlier stage.

Updating the current map (leaving gameplay unchanged) wouldn't have any impact other than the moment the changes go live and teams such as England and Brazil (for example) reappear in a different position

An updated 2014 map (with no gameplay changes) would look something like this (I'm not happy with all of the stuff in the background or the title, but this is what the new groups look like - and as far as I can tell the rest of the tournament structure remains the same)

I'm still wondering whether to create a new map with different gameplay, or if people are happy with the revamp/update above?

I'm certainly happy with the above.
This would replace the 2010 version, then?

Yeah, I guess so - assuming it's OK with the powers that be...

Gilligan wrote:btw, does this need updated coords or are they the same?

The coords are unchanged. The XML will need to be updated to allow the territories to be renamed - this will need to be done with a series of Find & Replaces - once to change the names to generic placeholders (ie RSA --> A1, BRA --> G1... etc) and then again to populate the new names (A1 --> BRA , G1 --> GER... etc)... It should only take about 20 mins, if that.

The blue text is hard to read I think.

Also, there have been more and more people coming out saying "conquering a region" isn't sufficient wording for win conditions. Generally it's been more acceptable to say "conquer and hold" as they think it's an immediate win condition.

Yeah, looking at it again, I have no idea what the blue text says! I'll reword the condition text too.

I'm going to change the '2014' text a little bit as well, as it's otherwise a straight lift from a FIFA logo.

My only remaining question is whether I should do this as a straight-up revamp (ie this will replace the 2010 map), or whether to do it as a new map...

idea for new map
The Dynamic Shapeshifting thing has given me a great idea to add a screen for the qualifying stages, with more teams from around the world, with mini-leagues from each of the international confederations and conditional borders to the teams in the finals -- and we could probably add conditional borders to the group stage so you can only get to the knockout phase with a complete group... Any thoughts?

I'm not sure that's something that will be ready within a month, never mind playtesting it. Maybe that's something that we can do in 2015 for the women's world cup?
