Re: BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR - V3(p2) New Stuff

Given that it's winter here (or as wintery as it gets in southern california), I highly doubt I managed to infect cairns...

So, I imagine that the various attack/bombard lines will be on the actual map eventually? You might want to try and make a bit more room, otherwise things could get a bit cluttered.

On the upside, it's quite a bit easier to discern between flagships, ships of the line, and frigates now.

without...attack lines
Image[/quote]

i'm thinking that the map is going to look much better without attack lines....

but to notate....perhaps something like:
"any ship may attack/board any neighbouring/surrounding vessel"

that would at least alleviate the lines ;)

It sure as shit looks better without attack lines, but I don't see how you're going to be able to do the map properly without them. You have pretty critical-looking attack routes with the lines that would be impossible with the "attacks neighboring ships" textual explanation. Plus "neighboring" can be interpreted quite broadly.

Hell, it's confusing with the lines too! ;-)

i agree with inc on this almost all the way. the attack lines should be gone, and although the attack-routes are currently complicated, you could simplify the attack capabilities of the ships and just limit it to a radius of 1 or 2 ships (or something). the last thing i'd say is that we could denote conquering with a double cannon and bombarding with a single cannon? but that again complicates the attack-ability of some ships as well as attack lines....

I think you misunderstood what I said... while the map would certainly look better without attack lines, it'll be almost impossible to make the map coherent without them.

Looks a lot nicer now, and the concept is really good for a map.

A few questions, though...
How can you bombard and board from each other?
Why is there need for two lines to connect some ships?
Why is the Blue commander's name different from the other two commanders?
Where are the names of some of the ships? (the one between revenge, polyphem, and defiance; southern part of the map)
Nice job on the bombarding and attack routes, but who does the ship above bombard? I think a few of the bombardments need to be cleared up.
Where are the Frigates on the map? You still have them in the legend

Overall, excellent graphics, and excellent map.

Yeh thanks Neon Peon...i just put this up to see what the reaction was and if it was any clearer to have it this way rather than the association listing, with/out the lines ???

You can't - although it is possible to state this in the XML - it will be impossible to determine which attack is which in the drop down.

New version much better Cairns - Removing all those names gives a lot more breathing space.

This is my first time looking at this map, but one of the major flaws I see is in the cannon bombardments. There are a few that I cannot tell who they are supposed to bombard. For example on the Argus, I can't tell whether it is bombarding Themis or Bellerplion. I also have trouble with Polyphem, Royal Sovereign, San Justo, Agamemnon, Neptune, and Bucentaure. You will need to fix their cannons to better point towards their targets.

Are you going to have the commanders (or at least some) start neutral? Because 3 terits spread out can be placed with a bonus pretty easily.

What are you talking about man....there are plenty of blue ships on the map that belong to the French.
the French and the Spanish just happen to be on the same side.
History lesson perhaps whites.... ;)
