I think that if the ships were from the side view, the map would look a lot better even though it is inaccurate to have a side view of a ship from the top. right now it is hard to tell they are ships.

P.S. Do we need to name every ship?

Well yes most ships don't look like ships that we see from the side when they are shown from the top.

As to every ship being named...well the rest of the foundry will determine that i guess amd i think you might have your own battle there. I could be wrong. :)
And what would you suggest otherwise. It's all good and well to state something but having no alternative to what you want doesn't tell me anything.

I dont post much in here (that might be an understatement), but I spend a lot of time looking, and I think with this type of map attention to detail is paramount, otherwise it will be just a sea battle. You may aswell say 'do we have to name every state on USA'. The answer is yes, you do.

Keep up the good work cairns.

I will go back to just looking now.

Your legend list is missing B26. ;)

Yes, definitely the top-down view. I can't imagine doing it any other way.

Also, am I supposed to be able to tell the differences between ship types (frigate, etc.) from the current draft? 'Cause maybe my eyes have gone south, but I can't. Or maybe I'm not looking for the right thing, tho I do detect a few of those flagship backstay banners.

the second draft is considerably better. this was my first time going through the thread, and i was going to suggest that it was hard to tell which ship belonged to whom, but now its much clearer.

i currently don't understand attack routes, and theres no bonus structure in place, but i'm sure you'll get that done soon

Incandenza, i don't think the frigates were much involved in action in this battle.
I know the Syrius (not listed yet) was a Frigate, but the others i am having a time to identify in this current line up.
Further reading needed....

Some major things being sorted.
1. Bombardment indicators
2. Boarding indicators
3. difference between frigates and ships of line
4. French ships not all identified yet.

Given that it's winter here (or as wintery as it gets in southern california), I highly doubt I managed to infect cairns...

So, I imagine that the various attack/bombard lines will be on the actual map eventually? You might want to try and make a bit more room, otherwise things could get a bit cluttered.

On the upside, it's quite a bit easier to discern between flagships, ships of the line, and frigates now.

without...attack lines
Image[/quote]

i'm thinking that the map is going to look much better without attack lines....

but to notate....perhaps something like:
"any ship may attack/board any neighbouring/surrounding vessel"

that would at least alleviate the lines ;)

It sure as shit looks better without attack lines, but I don't see how you're going to be able to do the map properly without them. You have pretty critical-looking attack routes with the lines that would be impossible with the "attacks neighboring ships" textual explanation. Plus "neighboring" can be interpreted quite broadly.

i agree with inc on this almost all the way. the attack lines should be gone, and although the attack-routes are currently complicated, you could simplify the attack capabilities of the ships and just limit it to a radius of 1 or 2 ships (or something). the last thing i'd say is that we could denote conquering with a double cannon and bombarding with a single cannon? but that again complicates the attack-ability of some ships as well as attack lines....

I think you misunderstood what I said... while the map would certainly look better without attack lines, it'll be almost impossible to make the map coherent without them.
