Start merging OT threads

Concise description:
  • Merge similar OT threads together

Specifics/Details:
  • Two threads in OT were recently merged for being 'too similar' in general focus and the content of discussion viewtopic.php?f=8&t=229979&p=5134799#p5134707
  • The vast majority of OT threads already fall into one of a small number categories: people talking about Trump; climate change denial; whether religion is right or wrong; etc
  • These could all be merged into a select number of super threads, helping declutter the forum and further the moderation team's goal of merging similar threads

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • Decluttered OT
  • All the good stuff saved in one place for easy access
  • More members
  • More income for CC

Good idea.

The stumbling block is that it's labour-intensive and error-prone, so to do a good job of it would require a lot more mods than we currently have.

So you are saying no threads should be merged? I certainly agree that we either fully enforce this new rule or never enforce it, in the interests of parity.

Maybe we could have just one thread called 'Load of Bollocks' ?

What a stupid thing to say.

"We can't do everything, so we should do nothing."

To illustrate the absurdity of what you're saying, just try to relate those principles to cleaning your house. "I don't have time to clean the whole house, so I MUST NOT clean the kitchen, because the other rooms would demand parity, and I don't have time to do it to them."

So when you made the below post, what future course of action were you saying that CC is going to adopt regarding thread mergers?

I wasn't saying anything would be adopted. I was just validating your idea as a good idea. In an ideal world, we would have enough manpower to do that kind of finicky maintenance, but since this isn't an ideal world we don't. Therefore, this idea will never be adopted. I didn't mean to imply that it would be; only to give you personal validation for having had a good idea.

Ah I see. The idea is good, but it won't be implemented! A tacit acknowledgement that merging my threads was a false start not to be repeated. Thank you.

So you volunteer to merge all OT posts then, right?

I will happily take mod status and commence merging threads.
