[Rules] Scale Number of Games To Turns Missed for Deadbeats

Description:

Scaling the number of missed turns before a user is kicked would stop the completely new player from holding up a game for three days. Something along the lines of:

0 games played = kick after 1 missed turn
3 games played = kick after 2 missed turns
9+ games played = kick after 3 missed turns

Being kicked from a game drops you down to the previous "ranking", so if you are at the 3 missed turns mark before kick, and are kicked from a game, then you are dropped back to 2 missed turns.

Priority: 2 (because any bug fixes should be 1 and this is a feature)

No, we like to give newbies a second chance. They get a message telling them they missed a turn. Some come back and play and go on to become valuable members of the site, once they realize how things work. We have a training program we're working on to help this as well.

Yes, it gives them a chance along with some reinforcement of the consequences of their actions. It gives them the opportunity to earn trust with the site and it gives existing players -- who have probably paid, more of a reason to not groan when a newbie joins the game.

It doesn't kick them off the site or ban them, it tells them that their behavior is not appropriate and gives them a chance to correct it, and becomes more tolerant as they build more trust.

I just don't think that punishing newbs is the way to go. Educating them is a much better solution IMO.

You make a good point, and we certainly don't want to scare anyone away. Today's newb is tomorrow's awesome team mate.

But there is nothing wrong with correcting bad behavior as well. For those newbs that stay with the game, they will get the point pretty quickly I think, and will try not to miss turns because they actually want to play the game.

I think a lot of the deadbeats are people who sign up and for whatever reason decide not to play (or perhaps someone is farming points, but that's on Lack's todo list). Maybe even some of them are griefing, but I don't have anything other than my cynical nature to base that on :-). This approach would drop them out of a game after they miss that first turn, letting the rest of the players advance the game.

I think it is a win/win solution. Existing players have an assurance that they will be able to quickly move forward with a game if someone deadbeats, and new players learn through a pretty easy lesson that they shouldn't be missing turns.

Well, if none of the mods or Lack have an objection I'd like to put up a poll on the subject to see how other users feel.

I don't like the idea, if a serious noob, who's actualy playing misses a turn because he or she isn't quite aqquainted with the site, getting kicked out of a game is discouraging and sends a bad messege
