Restrict Flame Wars to New Posters

* Suggestion Idea: I think we should hide the flame wars from new posters.
* Specifics: Users who have less than 100 posts won't be able to see or enter the flame wars forum
* Why it is needed: Too many times I see new posters enter flame wars and they either get completely owned or seriously offended. This makes them less confident as posters and ultimately leads them to leaving the forums, and perhaps even leaving CC altogether. By not being able to enter the flame wars, they will feel more accepted into the forums and it will encourage them to continue posting.
Thoughts?

Some people thrive on flaming others. While it may be a deterrent for some, it could be a draw for others. The comment for the forum already says it's not for the easily offended.
My suggestion would be to change the name to "Swear Wars". There normally isn't any good flaming going on; just people swearing as much as possible.

Feeling guilty Misterman?
On topic. I don't think this is a bad idea, but I have no idea if this current forum program can do that automatically or not. If not I don't think any mod wants to take the time to handle it manually.

I don't even go to flame wars that often anymore, but with the recent events with Honibaz and others I think my idea would be good

I'm no expert with phpBB forums, but I think restricting access like that is either nearly impossible or impossible.
Perhaps the next update from phpBB will have something similar. Go check out their forums and ask around!

i think that its very simple
if i am correct:
just make a forum rank (for example "frequent poster") with a requirement of 100 posts. (Everyone with 100 posts or more will automatically be given the rank. i think it says it right under the avatar. This is only a rank for the forums.) Then make it so that the Flame Wars is only visible to people with that rank.
A while back, i created a forum for me and a few friends....unfortunatly it was spammed by 1000's of advertisements. We got about 100 new members a day with one message each, an advertisement.....it was horribe!
back to the subject: i think that its a good idea. Maybe say somewhere in the forum that the Flame Wars exists so that the newcommers will not be confused (or in some cases it will give them something to look forward to).
(i like to write in parenthesis)

my only two posts in the flame wars are about Honibaz.

Don't you mean "Restrict Flame Wars to Non-New Posters"?

That is VERY easy to do. Just do what Kaplowitz said.
Everyone would have a title under their name, which might get annoying, though.
I vote NO. let the n00bs get owned in Flame Wars.

We'd like to keep the forum 'rankless' though. That is why it is currently off. We'd have to turn it on...something we'd rather not do. Thus the impossibility.

technically possible. Your choosing to make it difficult
why don't you want the ranks on?

Because it would encourage even more people to spam their way to higher post counts, and higher ranks.

Well, couldn't you just make it a hidden forum, like clan forums. Once you reach the required number of posts, you become a member of the "posting clan" or whatever you want to call it, and you can then enter the flame wars. I don't think ranks would be a problem, like others stated, if there are only two ranks.

I really don't think it's that simple. I have admin access to another board that uses the same software (might be a version behind), and while I can add ranks based on how many posts someone has, I cannot assign permissions for that rank.
I've checked permissions for individual, forum, and group. None allow me to dictate ranked users access to a private forum.
The only thing that I know of that could be automatic is to hide the forum to unregistered guests.

I think the simplest thing is to keep it the way it is.

I agree with misterman. Too many new posters with less than 100 posts.
Great. Now I've got to get 65 more posts really soon...

As a regular Flame Wars poster I have to say that I think there's a whole lot of merit in restricting the Flame Wars section of the forums in some way or other.
A lot of very new posters do go there, and a great number of them are immediately verbally savaged (many never post again after the experience). This is a bad experience for them, and it can only serve to make them feel less than satisfied with their CC forum experience.
On the other hand, a lot of Flame Wars regulars have spilled a lot of ink complaining about how Flame Wars is being overrun by spamming 'n00bs'. Restricting the Flame Wars forum would make them happier (so they say).
In other words:
1. New users would probably be happier if they were kept ignorant of Flame Wars until they found their feet in the community
2. Flame Wars regulars allege that they would be happier if new users weren't constantly making "I hate teh dices", and "RandomDude deadbeated, waaa!" threads.
While I appreciate Andy's sentiment that it is 'simpler' to keep things as they are, and while I see great merit in keeping the forums rank-free; I can't help but point out that there would be benefits to two seperate groups of forum users if some way of restricting/hiding the flame forums could be implemented, even if it does have to wait until the Php update.
Yes, keeping the status quo is easy; and I appreciate that Lack is very busy man. But you've got to admit that restricting Flame Wars would be beneficial two at least two seperate groups of users.
Even if it isn't going to be done (either until the update, or maybe ever), can we at least agree that doing it would be a good thing?

Restricting new users from the Flame Forum does not prevent older members from flaming in the other forums, which is what he is complaining about.

So many holes in this idea and reasons not to, don't have time to list them all. Not a good idea IMO.

Actually, I joined
because I was fascinated by a post. A buddy had sent me a link to the site, but I had been putting off actually joining. When I saw the forums, there was a topic on Christianity, and I was hooked. Been arguing there ever since.

Come on, at least tell the truth as to why you don't like it. We all know you just cant stop flaming the noobs in flame wars

I think it is a good idea, i see so many posts in flame wars were lil noobs jump in and only have 12 posts and complain about dice or somethin like that, they get beaten worse then a red headed step child (to borrow that phrase) and then they complain... if you restrict it, then they can get a foot hold in the community and maybe learn the ropes, not to mention if they stick around long enough they will gain friends who might post a lot in flame wars which can help if they start to get flammed not to mention it will stop stupid posts in flame forums that are just there to draw noobs in cuz it says their names..
im not sayin right now that it should be done, but in the long run it might be worth it if the programs for the site could allow it...
