New Maps and GOTM!

This weeks headlines...
Two new maps have arrived, we got the news you want.
ConquerClub, Game of the Month?

Maps 102 and 103 have arrived.
First off we have The Citadel, made by TaCktiX. It's inspired by The Military College of South Carolina. It's looks kind of like the CCU map. Not only because both of these maps are Schools, but that both have central positions which reaches almost all of the map. These positions is CCU's Quad and The Citadel's The Parade Deck.
The gameplay for The Citadel is normal, with one unique feature. The Parade Deck is a so-called Killer Neutral. A Killer Neutral is a neutral which means that each round it respawns like neutral again and all the armies that were on the Killer Neutral territory disappear. This map will by no doubt be included in several tournaments very soon. Natewolfman will include it in the next Foundry Update tournament. Maybe someone will beat him to it? We'll see.

The second map to be quenched is Archipelago, made by ZeakCytho and Mjinga. An archipelago is a cluster of islands. Which is exactly what the map is, a cluster of islands.
The map is one of normal gameplay, with no unique features. Though the map is still unique with it's graphics. This map will probably be a hit for the public. Hopefully we'll see it in several tournaments, and having epic battles under the warmth of the Bishan Island!

This week we sat down for an interview with samuelc812.
Next week, our interview will be with the player and organiser, hulmey. If you have any questions you can go post them in this thread. An interview with lackattack, the site's creator is coming soon as well. You can post those questions here.

Now, on with the interview!

Q: Hello, samuelc812.

A:
Hey Gozar, I was looking through Issue #41 of the newsletter and suddenly found my name  next to the interview, it was a surprise.

Q:How did you find this website?

A:
I actually got the Original Board game of Risk from my parents for my birthday last year [2007] and I really enjoyed it. Then my family lost interest, but I wanted to play so I thought there must be an internet site for Risk. So I Googled it and ConquerClub was the first option.

Q: Why did you join CC?

A:
I enjoyed the game so much that I wanted to find something on the internet, so I could play other people.

Q:Why did you start to play tournaments?

A:
Somehow one day I stumbled into the main forum and saw the Tournaments Forum and thought wow they do tournaments, so I went into the Create/Join a Tournament and joined Kilazul's WWII Extravaganza, and Kilazul's Football League.

Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?

A:
I am an ambitious person and I want to experience everything CC has to offer so first off I thought I would run a tournament, and I would just keep getting ideas and now I have 1 complete and 4 that are currently in progress.

Q: How long have you been organizing tournaments?

A:
About 4 months now...

Q:What tournament did you first run?

A:
It was the Star Wars: The Jedi Knights vs. The Sith Lords, a Quads Tournament on the Solar System Map and it was so popular, the second is now in progress.

Q: Where did you come up with your tournament ideas?

A:
It's pretty easy really, sometimes you get a theme and then you introduce it as a tournament that will decide which player is the best at this. Like which Jedi or Sith can Rule the Galaxy, or in Mario Party's case who will become the true Superstar and so on, it really get's people hooked and they want to join because they want that title etc.

Q: Who do you look to for inspiration when organizing your tournaments?

A:
No one really I am my own inspiration ;)

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.

A:
WWII Extravaganza was the first tourney I went in but I pulled out because it was too long and I had other commitments, no offense Kilazul ;) I really enjoyed the first tourney I ran it was exciting and organisational skills come naturally to me so I like it. Especially when that first person posts and says I want to be in your tournament it feels good.

Q: How many tournaments have you run already, and do you have a goal in mind for how many you want to run in total before you "retire"? How many are you running right now?

A:
I have completed 1 with 4 nearing completion, I don't have a goal I suppose I will keep running them until I get tired of them which isn't anytime soon

Q:What tournaments have you organized?

A:
StarWars: The Jedi Knights vs. The Sith Lords
StarWars: The Jedi Knights vs. The Sith Lords II
Mario Party Super Star
Sam's World Domination Tournament
Awesome Foursome Tournament

Q:What is your favourite tournament you have run?

A:
Mario Party has been fun maybe because I am playing well in it myself and doing really well

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in? Why?

A:
Mario Party because I am doing really well.

Q:Do you prefer to run or enter tournaments?

A:
Run them it is much more fun, it is hard work sometimes but I like it that way ;)

Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favourite?

A:
Well 3 of my Tournaments have been Quadruples so I would say that, except Singles is also good Settings are usually Sequential, Escalating, Unlimited, Sunny. I find the tournament goes a little faster with Escalating

Q: Do you find it easier to choose tournament settings yourself, or to let the players customize them?

A:
I have only let players choose their settings ONCE and it is Hard especially when there are 48 different maps and settings you have to set up  Definently easier to choose yourself, because you can just set up 48 of the same game ;)

Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?

A:
I am playing in all of my own tourneys so 4 plus Gilligans Super Smash Bros. and Diamonds14 Mario Kart: Grand Prix. so 6 all up. I play a lot also with my fellow xi gamers so I don't play many public games ;)

Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?

A:
I played 25 games before I got a win I know it sounds a bit sad :( but I was ecstatic when I won

Q:Have you ever won a tournament?

A:
Unfortunately no :( but then again it doesn't really worry me, I am just here to have fun, it ain't all about winning but it is a nice bonus if you do ;)

Q: What is your most disappointing tournament loss to date?

A:
WWII Extravaganza our team never won a game for about 15 games, but then again the other team was a perfect combination... vicmasters, Bigroo4601, Hambone and aspalm...

Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?

A:
You have to have an interesting introduction and a good title so when they look down the list of tournaments they can just say "yep I want to find out more about that". You have to come across as if you know what you are doing, and if you are doing it just to get more medals then maybe you shouldn't organise them. Keep the participants updated don't leave them in the dark, And congratulate them on their wins ;)

Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?

A:
I admire Army of Achilles for being so bold in asking for 256 players for the Ultimate All Maps Tourney, unfortunately I got eliminated in the first round :( He made like 1000 games for just Round 1 :o And he showed great organisational skills well done. Night Strike's Olympic tourney I haven't heard much about it but i know it was big... ;)

Q: What is the best Tournament that you think has been underestimated?

A:
I don't really have an answer for this question, but with some of the bigger tourneys that asked for 200 plus players I was surprised to see them get off the ground...

Q:Have you ever been disappointed in a tournament you have run? What about one you entered?

A:
Yes the Classical Tournament from Tk421 I played my last game a month ago and have never heard anything since and there are about 4 other people in the same boat, get your act together Tk  No disappointments in my own tourneys of course

Q: What makes a successful organizer?

A:
Organisers need to know what they are getting themselves into once you set one up you are committed to see it out, I have seen many tourneys fizzle from bad organisational skills...

Q: How do you attract players to your tournament, and what aspect (besides a reward of a premium prize or something like that) of a tournament do you think appeals to a lot of players and why?

A:
Like I said before the concept of win this tourney and you get a title, like people just like being on top  And you need to have an interesting idea behind your tournament, this grabs players and they think "oh this is new I might have a go"...

Q: Is there anything in particular that you dislike about tournament organizing?

A:
It sometimes can be time consuming, and people not reading the first post completely and then giving you incomplete information :x

Q: For you, what is the best part of being a tournament organizer?

A:
Satisfaction of providing enjoyment for other players...

Q: What mistakes do you see tournament organizers make the most?

A:
Being unorganised and when they don't know everything that is involved in it, then they freak out and quit.

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A:
Letting people choose their own maps and settings in a group of 100 people is a bad idea  it is sooooo time consuming... :Thinks of Awesome Foursome Tournament:

Q:What is your opinion on organizer neutrality? Should organizers be allowed to place themselves against their own clanmates in tournaments? Should organizers be allowed to join their own tournaments at all?

A:
It's not like you really have any upperhand if you participate in your own tourney only if you play well will you win...It's their choice whether they go up against their clanmates but I try to avoid it.
If they cheat well that's on their conscience, and they will eventually get caught ;)

Q: Do you use a "schedule" for updating your tournaments, or do you just wait until they need an update?

A:
I wait till it needs a major update like at the end of a round and so on...

Q:Should “question marks” be allowed to join tournaments?

A:
No most of them just deadbeat, and they should definitely not be able organise tournaments until they have a rank.

Q:Do you feel it is better to give a bye to players whose opponents deadbeats the tournament, or to use a reserve?

A:
Yes I think a bye is acceptable, That person would deadbeat in the game probably as well and that would give the player the win anyway so yeah give em' a bye.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A:
No I can't think of anything wrong with the site, I think the admins and mods do a great job, and everything is good ;)

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A:
1 months premium for every 5 tournaments run  as if that would ever happen  No I am happy with the way things are ;) Although a program where you could organise your tournament games would be good and PM Groups so you can just send an invite to a whole bunch of people that have been in your tourneys before...

Q: If you are thinking purely on balance of tournament games is there anything you would want changing?

A:
No not really...

Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?

A:
I think it is quite easy to organise tourneys but to encourage new people, it would be hard they have to have the motivation and I don't think there is anything more that can be done except for that 1 month premium for every 5 tournaments run idea that was good...

Q: List your top 5 biggest tournament headache's to this point

A:
1. Letting players choose their own maps and settings
2. Deadbeaters
3. Incomplete Information in Post's
4. Being in a badly organised Tournament
5.People asking questions that are answered in the original post

Q:How much time does CC take from your day?

A:
3 or 4 hours maybe I have never really kept track sometimes more sometimes less, usually less though...

Q:Are you a member of any clans or usergroups?

A:
Xi Games all the way the best group to be in, very friendly and awesome ;) I am also in the Down Under usergroup.

Q:Who are you?

A:
My name is Sam, I am a 19 year-old university student from Gosford, Australia....:Go Aussies: 8-)

Q: Why did you pick the name samuelc812?

A:
It's weird actually when I was picking my hotmail address I wanted samuelc777 but it was unavailable, and it gave me a few options and one of them was samuelc812 so I chose it and it is my username for almost everything now

Q:Where are you from?

A:
Sydney, Australia

Q:Favourite play colour?

A:
Green for sure 8-)

Q:Favourite and least favourite map?

A:
Iberia and Sydney Metro are my faves and I also play a lot of World 2.1.
I am very sorry cairnswk but I absolutely loathe Waterloo, it is the most confusing map in the entire world  Sorry mate all your other maps are awesome though ;)

Q:Favourite settings?

A:
No Cards, Flat Rate or Escalating, Unlimited, Sunny

Q:Freestyle or sequential?

A:
Sequential

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A:
As a sequel to the Awesome Foursome Tournament I will be running a Double Trouble Tournament soon, then after that I have to find a rhyme for triple  maybe Triple Cripple 8-)

Q: Any parting shots?

A:
No parting shots from me....

Q: Thank you for your time.

A:
Anytime Gozar ;)
