Hello all, this is News Hound samuelc812 reporting for the Tournament Newsletter, this week we have some exciting news… The Map Foundry has announced 2 Holiday Map-Making Competitions, we will speak to oaktown about the purpose of the competition and how it will affect us here in the tournaments forum, and also run through some of the details of the competition…

This week I sat down with oaktown for a chat about the map-making competition…

News Hound wrote:Hey oaktown

oaktown wrote:Hey back at ya... glad to be of service.

News Hound wrote:What is the purpose of the foundry competition?

oaktown wrote:Most of us wouldn't be here on Conquer Club if we didn't have a healthy competitive side to our personalities, so bringing some friendly competition into the Foundry is a good thing. And since past competitions have been won by Foundry regulars, we wanted to get a competition going that would bring in new blood. Just as we were ready to announce it we were given the thumbs-up for a Centerscape revamp, so it seemed like fun to run side-by-side competitions - one for the Foundry veterans, and one for new mapmakers.

News Hound wrote:How will this benefit the tournaments forum?

oaktown wrote:New maps! You tournament guys are so busy (read: popular) that you have to be running out of ideas. ;) We'll end up with a brand spanking new map of Central America, and a Centerscape replacement that doesn't look like balls. Plus, I suspect that even the losers of this competition will be able to use elements of their designs in future work; our last revamp competition produced some beautiful work, and the ideas that came out of that competition will result in more than just an update of the Brazil map.

News Hound wrote:Can anyone get involved?

oaktown wrote:Absolutely, and by setting up one competition that is not open to our veteran mapmakers we are hoping it ill be more attractive to novices. Even if you've never wandered into the Foundry you'll be on even footing with your competition. That said, I'm certain we're still going to see some very high quality work - there are a lot of Photoshop junkies out there, and the bits and pieces that I've seen so far look quite good.

News Hound wrote:If there was one piece of advice you could give to amateur mapmakers, what would it be?

oaktown wrote:Ugh, only one? I guess it would be to keep your eyes on the prize. Most mapmakers will agree that the first project is a lot more work than they'd ever imagined. If you're serious about making a map you'll get it done, and we're there to help you, but you need to go into this with the understanding that you aren't going to be able to whip up a ready-to-play map in an hour or two using the Paint application that came with Windows. Oh, and my second piece of advice would be not to use that Paint application that came with Windows. We recently had a good discussion as to why in the Foundry.

News Hound wrote:As a person who has had a map quenched, how does it feel when you see people making tournaments out of your map?

oaktown wrote:I'm routinely shocked to see that the map that I put together two years ago (which is by no means my best) still has over 100 active games being played on it - and even more surprised to see it being used for the occasional tournament! It's a good feeling to create something that becomes a part of the site, especially at a site like CC where the expectation and standards are pretty high.
Now, if I could win some of those tournaments I'd like it even more. ;)

News Hound wrote:Thankyou for your time :)

oaktown wrote:My pleasure, and I'm looking forward to seeing your competition entry, samuelc.

This time, amazzony's tournament advice will be short because I was hoping to get some feedback and questions from readers but it seems that everybody either know their inbox really well or don't understand at all so no questions came. I would like to say that this part of the newsletter is mostly to help organisers and players to understand and learn some aspects of the site and other things that are related to tournament organising. I won't be giving hints how to win tournaments because for that there are way better people like BaldAdonis, Godd and killmanic who are in the top of winning tournaments.

As promised in last issue, we'll look a bit more into inbox and this time I would like to turn your attention to messaging etiquette. I'm not sure it's the best word for the following but it's the best I could find.

  • First thing, after deciding who to message, is to write a subject. For that, I would recommend not to use Hey or Hello but something more specific about what the message is about. It's especially important when messaging people who get many PMs a day and might not have enough time to read them always (people like myself  ). If you are writing about a tournament then always include the tournament name in the title and after it you can write more specifically what your message is about (in brackets for example). Add "results", "question", "mistake" etc.
  • Secondly, after subject, you'll write your question or problem or whatever is on your mind. There's not much to follow in there IMO, just make sure that you make yourself understandable. Though, I have a few suggestions. When you are writing about some certain game, make sure that you add the game number. If you are having trouble with some certain player, make sure to add the player name (correctly written). Little things like that can save a lot of time.

It seems that this is it for today. If you have any comments or questions about Inbox and how I presented it then don't hesitate and contact me. Next week we'll be looking more closely to BBCode and tags, if you are interested in something specific then let me know about it.

Happy messaging and cya next week in Amazzony's Advice!

lackattack remains tied up, so his interview remains pending. This week we bring you a chat with killmanic. Next week, we will bring you an interview with Boss_oss_ss based on your questions. You can send them in here.

Now, on with the interview!

Q: Hello,killmanic.

A:Hello

Q:How did you find this website?

A:My roommates last year told me about it, and we all played for a while.

Q: Why did you join CC?

A:To destroy my roommates

Q:Why do you like CC?

A:Its a fun site that can take my mind off of school

Q:Why did you start to play tournaments?

A:I was getting bored playing normal games

Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?

A:Well I had seen some very poorly run tournaments and thought I could do better then they did.

Q: How long have you been organizing tournaments?

A:Not that long its been perhaps 4 months

Q:What tournament did you first run?

A:Almost completely random (a partial rip off of Natewolfmans Randomocity)

Q: Where did you come up with your tournament ideas?

A:The first was from Nate's and my second was because I wanted to see a huge AOR 2 4 player tournament where it was based on a lot of games so hopefully the best would win

Q: Who do you look to for inspiration when organizing your tournaments?

A:No one really

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.

A:Almost completely random was a 1v1 tourney where it was 1 game per round winner advancing, where all the settings and the map were chosen at random by random.org, overall it was a fun time and an easy to run tournament. The first tournament I entered was Nate's first foundry update. In the first round I faced off against Nate and won, but lost in the second round. It was a lot of fun.

Q: How many tournaments have you run already, and do you have a goal in mind for how many you want to run in total before you "retire"? How many are you running right now?

A:I have finished 2 and have 1 in the create/join stage right now. I'm not sure retire is the right word, as I take longer between my tournaments than OP's retirement lasted, so I guess I have retired twice before

Q:What tournaments have you organized?

A:Almost completely random and Ultimate Magic Tournament

Q:What is your favourite tournament you have run?

A:Almost completely random, making every game be fully random (minus the fact it was always 1v1 and seq.), there were some great pairings in it like circus with fog, adj forts, and flat rate.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in? Why?

A:That has to be either AOR Officer's Magic Club Tournament, which was my first win, or The Rescue of Optimus Prime. The AOR tournament because i remember stressing out about the finals so much counting the points and running down all the possible situations that would have me end up winning the tournament. The reason for The rescue of OP is because I still have the first round game going and yet the tournaments been done for many months now.

Q:Do you prefer to run or enter tournaments?

A:As much as I like running them I would have to say I like joining them more

Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favourite?

A:1v1 since if mistakes are made I am making them. As for favorite format I cant really decide I like most formats.

Q: Do you find it easier to choose tournament settings yourself, or to let the players customize them?

A:I have never let them chose so I can't really answer this.

Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?

A:Yes I am, most of my games are tournaments.

Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?

A:Not all that excited, what got me more excited was a few wins later when I beat djt5483, JOHNNYROCKET24, and Flang, when I was teamed with 2 other players brand new to CC also.

Q:Have you ever won a tournament?

A:Yeah 15 currently Bald and I share the title of conquerer of tournaments (if there was such a title)

Q:Why are you keeping me from winning tournaments??

A:Let me guess, Night Strike wrote this one, and its nothing personal you're just in the wrong place at a wrong time.

Q: What is your most disappointing tournament loss to date?

A:Optimus Prime Anniversary Tournament, where after beating OP in the first round I ran into someone who my dice could not beat (I never killed a single army while attacking) in the third round.

Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?

A:All tournaments are successful as long as the TO keeps them going to the end and there is no messed up rules so that winning the finals is easier for some people then others.

Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?

A:Amazzony's single seasons are very impressive, and so were some of Nate's bigger tournaments, so I have no clue on this one.

Q: What is the best Tournament that you think has been underestimated?

A:One shot one kill, it took Nate so much work to get everyone to sign up.

Q:Have you ever been disappointed in a tournament you have run? What about one you entered?

A:Not with any I have ran but many that I have entered, as for a while none of them seemed to ever finish they always just died off.

Q: What makes a successful organizer?

A:Being willing and able to put in the time that is needed.

Q: How do you attract players to your tournament, and what aspect (besides a reward of a premium prize or something like that) of a tournament do you think appeals to a lot of players and why?

A:Just fun random ideas, because there is so much of the same thing out there in terms of tournaments that something new will attract a lot of people.

Q: Is there anything in particular that you dislike about tournament organizing?

A:When people bug me asking how they are doing. I post all the info that is done on the thread so check it and stop being lazy.

Q: For you, what is the best part of being a tournament organizer?

A:Getting to see people enjoying my hard work.

Q: What mistakes do you see tournament organizers make the most?

A:Starting too big of a tournament they can not handle.

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A:As I haven't run that many tournaments I haven't made any big mistakes.

Q:What is your opinion on organizer neutrality? Should organizers be allowed to place themselves against their own clanmates in tournaments? Should organizers be allowed to join their own tournaments at all?

A:I think an organizer should be allowed to join their own tournaments as long as there is no starting advantage for them. Almost all the organizers I know are fair about pairings, its only the ones who want to win and don't realize its just a game that do bad things.

Q: Do you use a "schedule" for updating your tournaments, or do you just wait until they need an update?

A:I tend to wait till an update is needed.

Q:Should “question marks” be allowed to join tournaments?

A:I have to say no, since most tournaments are a few months long and the question mark hasn't shown yet that they will be able to play for the whole thing.

Q:Do you feel it is better to give a bye to players whose opponents deadbeats the tournament, or to use a reserve?

A:It depends the first round i might try and use a reserve but after that I will tend to give a bye.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A:I would have to say that question marks neither gained nor lost points.

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A:Make it so tournament waiting games did not count towards the 50 limit as I along with others have run into the problem while being part of Map Blaster.

Q: If you are thinking purely on balance of tournament games is there anything you would want changing?

A:Nope.

Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?

A:Play in a few first then try making one and make it a small one to start, to many games will just make it to hard.

Q: List your top 5 biggest tournament headache's to this point

A:As I don't want to list people I wont be answering this.

Q:How much time does CC take from your day?

A:To much, but it's well worth it.

Q:Are you a member of any clans or usergroups?

A:Yes my clan is CC's finest clan, The Imperial Dragoons. I am also in a few usergroups.

Q:Whats it like being a member of one of the most awesomest clans on CC?

A:Its great all my clan mates are a lot of fun to talk to.

Q:Who are you?

A:I'm trying to figure that out myself, in such an insane world who really knows themselves.

Q:What is your name? What is your address? What is your Social Security Number? What is your phone number? Do the past four questions seem stalkerish at all?

A:Charles Montgomery Burns, Just send all my mail to the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant Ill get it there, 2, unlisted, not at all.

Q: Why did you pick the name killmanic?

A:Ill just say there was some booze involved.

Q:Why do I keep spelling your name wrong as 'killmaniac'?

A:Cause the name was supposed to be killingmaniac.

Q:Why were you a chat mod as opposed to a Tournament mod?

A:Cause I spend a lot of time in chat, and there would be better people then me to be a tournament mod, say one of the elves.

Q:Why do I like Night Strike better?

A:I have no clue.

Q:How do you get time to mod the chat?

A:Its hard. I tend to have chat up in a small window while I do other things and just check in on chat every 5 min or so, or if I suddenly see a lot of emotes.

Q:Where are you from?

A:Earth

Q:Favourite play colour?

A:I like blue a lot but green is also great.

Q:Favourite and least favourite map?

A:Waterloo is the best map ever, and I hate all the very small maps

Q:Why are you good at Waterloo?

A:Cause I have played it a lot and like the concept of the map. Also it was a difficult map so I decided I wanted to get good at it.

Q:Favourite settings?

A:1v1 Waterloo, foggy, seq, chained, no cards.

Q:Freestyle or sequential?

A:Seq

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A:Not right now

Q:Why is xruan so amazing?

A:Umm......

Q:Natewolfman would like a 2 page essay on why he is your role model in every way shape and form on CC.

A:2 page really, can't he just read above and see that he did inspire me to become a TO isn't that enough.

Q: Any parting shots?

A:This was a lot longer then I thought. PS any colonels or higher out there join my new tournament.

Q: Thank you for your time.

A:No problem
