Round Limit Warning/Counter

I'd love to see an update to BOB that included notification of impending Round Limits, or if not on BOB, than a separate add-on. The Round Limit usually takes me by surprise, and it would be great if there was a counter or a warning 5 rounds before the round limit was reached.

That is a great idea. It should be easy to add something, but what exactly would people want? Something next to the Round counter just above the map, like

Game 10861134 Round 3 (of 20)

Should it turn red and/or flashing at some point, like the timer?

Game 10861134 Round 19 (of 20)

(Hmmph, there is a [Flash] button in the post editor but I cannot get it to work.)

How many rounds warning do we want?

Is the warning visible enough up there above the map? I tend to have that scrolled off the screen. Maybe there should be a Rounds Remaining just beneath the Time Remaining on the right of the map.

Perhaps there could be a popup when you hit Begin Turn which just says "This will begin your turn in Round 3 of 30." with an OK button? Should there be a Cancel button, which aborts the Begin Turn action, so that you can stop and reconsider your strategy? Again, how many rounds ahead do we want warnings?

I'm guessing that speed gamers or freestylers may be less inclined to use this. Should the script allow for automatically restricting this function in those cases?

Great idea! I got caught out a few times! See my preferences in your quote....

How many rounds warning do we want?

I say 3, or maybe 5?

Hmm, with manual games, does the deploy-round count towards the total? Otherwise, it is quite easy to do.

That's a good question. If we look at an example, say Game 9782084, we see this in the log:

Code: Select all
2011-09-20 14:08:35 - Game has been initialized
2011-09-20 14:08:42 - kozik began deploying initial troops
2011-09-20 14:08:54 - Mageplunka69 began deploying initial troops
2011-09-20 14:08:59 - Mageplunka69 ended the turn
2011-09-20 14:09:03 - kozik ended the turn
2011-09-20 14:09:03 - Incrementing game to round 2
2011-09-20 14:09:11 - kozik received 3 troops for 8 regions

and later, this:

Code: Select all
2011-09-20 14:47:17 - Incrementing game to round 20
2011-09-20 14:47:51 - kozik received 3 troops for 7 regions
2011-09-20 14:47:55 - kozik played a set of Devon Shire, Cumberland, and Kent worth 10 troops
2011-09-20 14:48:18 - kozik deployed 6 troops on Gloucester
2011-09-20 14:48:21 - kozik deployed 7 troops on East Sussex
2011-09-20 14:48:24 - kozik assaulted West Sussex from East Sussex and conquered it from Mageplunka69
2011-09-20 14:48:29 - kozik assaulted Cornwall from East Sussex and conquered it from Mageplunka69
2011-09-20 14:48:45 - kozik assaulted Surrey from Gloucester and conquered it from Mageplunka69
2011-09-20 14:48:50 - kozik assaulted Buckingham from Surrey and conquered it from Mageplunka69
2011-09-20 14:48:58 - kozik ended the turn and got spoils
2011-09-20 14:49:03 - Mageplunka69 received 3 troops for 6 regions
2011-09-20 14:49:05 - Mageplunka69 deployed 3 troops on Lincolnshire
2011-09-20 14:49:06 - Mageplunka69 assaulted Leicester from Lincolnshire and conquered it from kozik
2011-09-20 14:49:14 - Mageplunka69 ended the turn and got spoils
2011-09-20 14:49:14 - Round limit reached, kozik has the most troops followed by the most regions
2011-09-20 14:49:14 - kozik won the game
2011-09-20 14:49:14 - Mageplunka69 lost 22 points
2011-09-20 14:49:14 - kozik gained 22 points

This is a little surprising to me, as I thought I had seen references to round 0 somewhere.

In an automatic game, say Game 9772059, we see this at the start:

Code: Select all
2011-09-19 13:43:56 - Game has been initialized
2011-09-19 14:01:39 - GloryOfThe80s received 3 troops for 8 regions
2011-09-19 14:01:44 - GloryOfThe80s deployed 3 troops on Fisherman's Wharf
2011-09-19 14:01:49 - GloryOfThe80s assaulted Financial from Fisherman's Wharf and conquered it from Dennis00
2011-09-19 14:01:51 - GloryOfThe80s ended the turn and got spoils
2011-09-20 14:01:51 - Dennis00 missed a turn
2011-09-20 14:11:33 - Swanster received 3 troops for 8 regions
2011-09-20 14:11:45 - Swanster deployed 3 troops on Mission
2011-09-20 14:11:53 - Swanster assaulted Potrero Hill from Mission and conquered it from GloryOfThe80s
2011-09-20 14:12:18 - Swanster ended the turn and got spoils
2011-09-20 14:26:24 - Johanness0 received 3 troops for 8 regions
2011-09-20 14:26:40 - Johanness0 deployed 3 troops on Marin Headlands
2011-09-20 14:28:11 - Johanness0 reinforced Inner Sunset with 2 troops from Ingleside
2011-09-20 14:28:11 - Johanness0 ended the turn
2011-09-20 14:30:55 - litvak received 3 troops for 8 regions
2011-09-20 14:31:49 - litvak deployed 3 troops on Glen Park
2011-09-20 14:31:54 - litvak assaulted Ingleside from Glen Park and conquered it from Johanness0
2011-09-20 14:32:36 - litvak assaulted Financial from Civic Center and conquered it from GloryOfThe80s
2011-09-20 14:33:00 - litvak ended the turn and got spoils
2011-09-20 14:33:00 - Incrementing game to round 2
2011-09-20 16:50:45 - GloryOfThe80s received 3 troops for 7 regions

and this at the end:

Code: Select all
2011-10-02 08:23:50 - litvak ended the turn and got spoils
2011-10-02 08:23:50 - Incrementing game to round 20
2011-10-02 08:32:25 - GloryOfThe80s received 3 troops for 3 regions
2011-10-02 08:32:26 - GloryOfThe80s deployed 3 troops on Richmond District
2011-10-02 08:32:27 - GloryOfThe80s assaulted Haight from Richmond District and conquered it from Swanster
2011-10-02 08:32:31 - GloryOfThe80s ended the turn and got spoils

2011-10-02 08:58:59 - Swanster played a set of Mission, Refineries, and Alcatraz nuking each region
2011-10-02 08:59:13 - Swanster deployed 3 troops on Potrero Hill
2011-10-02 08:59:15 - Swanster assaulted Mission from Potrero Hill and conquered it from neutral player
2011-10-02 08:59:17 - Swanster assaulted Haight from Mission and conquered it from GloryOfThe80s

2011-10-02 13:25:32 - Johanness0 assaulted Alcatraz from Angel Island and conquered it from neutral player
2011-10-02 13:25:50 - Johanness0 ended the turn and got spoils
2011-10-02 14:14:29 - litvak received 4 troops for holding Oakland
2011-10-02 14:14:29 - litvak received 5 troops for 15 regions
2011-10-02 14:14:45 - litvak played a set of Oakland, Alameda, and Potrero Hill nuking each region
2011-10-02 14:14:57 - litvak deployed 9 troops on Berkeley
2011-10-02 14:15:16 - litvak ended the turn
2011-10-02 14:15:16 - Round limit reached, litvak has the most troops
2011-10-02 14:15:16 - litvak won the game
2011-10-02 14:15:16 - GloryOfThe80s lost 30 points
2011-10-02 14:15:16 - Dennis00 lost 21 points
2011-10-02 14:15:16 - Swanster lost 22 points
2011-10-02 14:15:16 - Johanness0 lost 18 points
2011-10-02 14:15:16 - litvak gained 91 points

So it looks like the manual deployment phase is simply counted as round 1. I guess we can think of it as a limited round, where turns have no attack or reinforcement phase.

Yes, Manual counts as Round 1. I have much experience with this. I would think 3 rounds notice would be good.

3-5 rounds would be good with an off/on toggle switch.

I'd be fine with either a pop-up or a red warning, much like the game clock turns red when you're running low on time.

This is a great idea. 3 round warning should be enough, as that would get you time to consider your last cards. It might also be nice for it to say "Game 10861134 Round 20 (Last Round)" of Final Round
