This literally just happened to me. I found out it was on Auto renew when I got billed yesterday. I found this thread searching for a way to cancel, it is not clear at all on how to do so.

that's the point

didn't everyone force change onto an automatically renewing subscription too? so like if someone was premium and they'd stopped playing expecting their premium to run out, they would have continued to be billed

This comes up quite a bit.

I had a long back adnf orth with BW a couple of years ago about it. He seems to think it was odd I didnt read the full T&Cs (10,000+ words of it).

I said he could just put it on the invoice or mention it in the store. Icepack has it correctly covered above- this is a dodgy scam site with deceptive practises.

What you can do though is use paypal. When you make your payment you actually get notification for two transactions from Paypal- one is the initial payment and one is the recurring subscription. You can then cancel the recurring subscriptionfrom Paypal and the CC renewal will be rejected by Paypal when they try and put the payment through the next year.

Well as greasy as it is, it's industry standard. The roku was not signing into the MLB.tv app and my wife found out her subscription for that was going to renew in March.

It might be industry standard for porn sites, but this is the only site I know of that does this. Everyone else lets you know its a recurring fee.

Subscription does not mean automatically recurring. Subscription means a service for a set amount of time.

"Let's you know" in exactly the same way that CC does. It's buried in the fine print. That's the way Pogo does it, that's the way Netflix does it. Those are the only two that I have personal experience with, but I hear of countless others. It is the industry default for pretty much everything on the web.

I certainly was not defending the practice. Then again I described it in a way I presumed implied I feel it is negative.

Anyway.. Let's compile some data here.

The three step process of unsubscribing

1. Click on store under Personal Menu

Uff, reading this thread gives me such a damn headache. So much wrong here.

2dimes wrote:Well as greasy as it is, it's industry standard. The roku was not signing into the MLB.tv app and my wife found out her subscription for that was going to renew in March.

Hmm. Do you know industry standard? I've spent some time doing game design, and currently have a close relative who actually professionally designs games for a major corp that has big name games on both android and IOS platforms. CC's store is definitely NOT "industry standard".

BrutalBob wrote:Subscription does not mean automatically recurring. Subscription means a service for a set amount of time.

Correct.

Dukasaur wrote:"Let's you know" in exactly the same way that CC does. It's buried in the fine print. That's the way Pogo does it, that's the way Netflix does it. Wrong. But dont take my word for it. Lets look at your examples.

Right on the front page prior to sign up on Pogo is this (emphasis on the key part added for you to see)
"Members-Only Benefits
Ad-free gameplay
Premium games
1,000+ gaming Challenges
Special discounts (save up to 50%)
Free month + Gems with
annual subscription auto-renewal
Full Screen Mode in select games
Pogo Gems sign-up bonus"

Netflix: First you see this:

Choose your plan.
You won't be charged until after your free month.
We'll remind you three days before your trial ends.
No commitments, cancel anytime.

Then where you put your card info you get this: (again, emphasis placed is mine)

By clicking the "Start Membership" button below, you agree to our Terms of Use, Privacy Statement, and that you are over 18. You may cancel at any time in your free trial and will not be charged. To cancel, go online to your Account and click on "Cancel Membership."

Netflix will automatically continue your membership at the end of your free trial and charge the membership fee (currently $15.99) to your payment method on a monthly basis until you cancel. There are no refunds or credits for partial months.

^^^ notice that last bit, more on it later since everyone keeps talking about "industry standard" (<<<< icepack talking here, no longer copy and pasted)

Link 1: Definition of the Business Model - The subscription business model is a business model in which a customer must pay a recurring price at regular intervals for access to a product or service. (note: this doesn't say AUTO recurring, just reoccurring and at regular intervals...meaning at a certain interval, it could theoretically stop. Which is why "auto renewal" leaves no doubt)

However we aren't trying to define the business model, but we are defining whether the word "subscribe" means / should be interpreted as auto renewing. You can SUBSCRIBE to a newspaper for an annual thing, but at the end of that you must renew. Same with Readers Digest and many other sort of things like that. It doesn't inherently mean it auto renews. The actual word means: the action of making or agreeing to make an advance payment in order to receive or participate in something. (no mention of auto renew or ongoing, just that you pay in advance for a duration that you will receive something in return).

Link 2: Its a great read. But again, you have to look carefully at your own sources. Under "What is a subscription?" this comes up:
"The subscription you sign up for articulates whether you’re paying monthly, quarterly or yearly and how renewals happen.

Again, the huge aspect thats missing for Conquer Club is the word auto renewing. It DEFINES how those renewals are happening, but for CC's store, its missing. CC's Store DOESN"T EVEN TELL YOU AUTO RENEW WHEN YOU CLICK INFO (which would still be an issue, cuz its "hidden" behind another click (more on industry standard later...) but at least then it would be semi clearER and openly listed. You have to go to TERMS (even further 10k word document) and find the appropriate section.

Lord Arioch wrote:Dont really see the problem ... if u just bloody read stuff ... u find the unsubscribe pretty easily... stop whining and get glasses

Thats probably the worst take and customer service attitude literally any company could ever take. CC doesn't have an abundance of customers to piss off here, and its losing customers at a concerning rate. Why wouldn't you want to make the process as painless as possible? By doing this, you are creating a problem where there doesn't need to be one, and LITERALLY LOSING CUSTOMERS over the method of them TRYING TO GIVE YOU MONEY. People leaving over a poor product is one thing, pissing them off because you weren't clear is just bad business.

jfm10 wrote:The three step process of unsubscribing

I dont think the main issue is how hard it is to unsubscribe (maybe a smaller extent, finding the place to do it) but the fact they didn't know they were auto renewing to begin with. Thats the KEY problem here, the rest of the stuff is mostly forgivable.

-----

Alright, industry standards. Lets talk! I've seen a few people reference games, and different various subscription models, including (but not limited to Apple, Android stores, and a few others I responded to above etc)

Image

This wouldn't fly in either of the Apple Store, nor the Andriod. 1) Buy implies a one time purchase, and is the 100% wrong word for the button. It should say subscribe. But also, both stores REQUIRES the amount, and term to be side by side, and be very clear on whether its a "auto-renewing subscription: access to content or services for which you are charged on a recurring basis, such as ongoing access to streaming video content or cloud storage) or, non-renewing subscriptions (access to content or services for a limited time; does not renew automatically, such as a season pass to streaming content)

There are DIFFERING types of subscriptions in the "industry" so simply stating that its a subscription does NOT imply auto renewal. Apple and Android both differentiate between the two and make clear whether its a one time, or auto renewing basis.

CC's Store would be rejected by both Apple and Android for lack of information on the purchase, the wrong wording on the button for the subscribe, and lack of detail about it. Even if the info provided when you click "info" was presented on the main apple and android page, it would STILL be rejected because it STILL has insufficient information.

Image

I think its pretty clear, based on the reoccurring posts in General Discussion of people who continue to come back, or find out they're being billed, or looking for how to cancel, or seeking answers tells you that the current set up is NOT sufficient. Nor is it customer friendly. This thread (and others like it) should be taken far more seriously, imo. Its just good customer service, and encourages people to return to your store / game instead of chases them away.

Are you sure about that?

Yes. I have had many subscriptions online and offline. All of my offline magazine subscriptions sent me a renewal before the expiry period.

I agree. He does, so I will quote him.

Some Guy TeeGee cited wrote:The subscription you sign up for articulates whether you’re paying monthly, quarterly or yearly and how renewals happen.

The renewal is either distinct from or at the least, a distinct part of the subscription. It is not self evident that simply because there is a subscription there is an automatic payment involved

And they tell you about it. As I think Ice pointed out in that monstrous post above.

Reality is if it was 100% accepted practice and / or well known, there would not be these long discussions about it. Clearly these discussions are evidence of a problem
