48hrs?! no! that's 2 days, and that means you'd go around the world twice! UTC + 24 hrs IS UTC. Same with UTC + 48hrs. It is UTC, because you go all around the world. (at least I think that's right. Maybe a possible off by 1 error somewhere...)

People celebrate. States may hijack their celebrations for propaganda purposes, and merchants may exploit them commercially, but the bottom line is that people need periodic periods of communal catharsis, and if ultimately that is why they're out there. Let the politicians have their speeches; nobody is listening anyway.
