the "unwritten rules"

Postby SoN!c on Fri Jun 02, 2023 1:26 pm

I've been on the site for 2 years now and realy enjoyed it a lot.

BUT: i have also seen my part of "unwritten rules" on a lot of subjects..

Why don't we post them all here so everybody can look them up?

Unwritten rules about truces (or NAP's), "2 turns, breaker attacks second" while others say "2 turns", "snap has to be given" while some say that is only true for first 12 hours,.. there is quite a lot and i noticed close to 50% does not understand them at all

I think the 12 hour rule is something that usually only applies in the clan world, but many of us will carry it over as a courtesy, particularly against players we face often in the clan world or non clan players who are known to abide by it as well, but I don't think its an "unwritten rule" in other games - i.e. if someone consistently does not give me a chance to get a snap in 12 hours I will not feel obligated to give them that chance. Often in non clan games I will "violate" the 12 hour rule but then post the information they'd have known so I am not waiting to take the turn. I've had two or three occasions where people thought that was unfair, but since its not a rule I did not care.

Without meaning any disrespect to lower ranking players, I feel like the fog courtesy is often extended in poly/1v1 games among higher-ranked players. In part because you might be familiar with the other person, in part because imo it's just part of the integrity of the game? I feel like in my games against lower ranked players, they often join and take the turn right away. That's not bad either, but do give the information your opponent lost 12 hours or not. If for some reason a clan opponent didnt take their snap in the first 12 hours, who am I to deny them that information? We want to win fair and square.

Still, I don't know, it's a bit of guesswork and also rude to say that other people don't enjoy the game in the same way higher ranked players do, but it's the best way I can word it.

The trucebreaking stuff, I've never seen someone clearly word it and I very much mind the initial wording. I always want the wording to punish the one breaking it.

What's the 12 hours thing about? I'm supposed to skip the only chance I get to take my turn all day because my opponent can't just play the board they see in front of them? F that.

You dont have to wait, but it's still courteous to tell them what you did. It's a bit like waiting for kick off until the other team has entered the field.

It is absolutely NOTHING like that.

The game hasn't / cannot start without the other team on the field.

For a self proclaimed "high ranking player", you're a complete dolt.

It's not about the 12 hour rule only Koolbak, but about "truce rules" also, among other stuff

As someone ranked 23 currently with a peak rank of 2, I feel like I can implicitly call myself one of them.

Bur anyway, my metaphor was indeed not 100% on point. How would you describe it, when the starting team has an immediate advantage in a 1v1 or team vs team environment, without the opposite team being aware of what happened? Joining a jam session and having no idea where the others are in a song? At least my comparison is visually descriptive, so I urge you to improve on it - I found it lacking too but couldn't find a better example.

I feel like you're attacking the person and the metaphor rather than arguing that the 12h fog courtesy is bullshit anyway, so... keep arguing outside of the lines.

Thx Xtreme Ways, also im kinda used sidekicks attacking the person instead of the ball..especially when im the person. No worries i play ball always.. Also i never called myself a '"high ranking player", i play for fun and as long im not a private rank or a cook i could not care less about it. Too many cooks just suicide for the same reason (playing the man instead of the ball)

But you certainly are a high ranked (ranked 23 currently) so i appreciate the support ! thx

Both that and the kick off analogy are spot on. I know people who don't care if you start without giving them a chance to snap and that's fine. But it seems to me to be a common courtesy.

It bothers me some in a 1v1 but I don't place high importance on those games for the most part so I live with it. Like I said, I will just start and give the information in chat, which seems ok for 99% of the people and I am ok with an opponent doing that...I play individual games totally for fun so I don't like waiting 12 hours for them to start.

Giving the info in chat is actually often more info then they'd get if they snapped so I can't imagine why they would have a problem with it.

Eh - this is niche and people are dicks if they complain - but I like my pre-game snapshots in the case of finding isolated territories of threatened people later on. Having a snapshot and saying "7/11R, 8/11G, 8/11B, 11/11Y visible" helps a ton in finding out where the remaining territories may be,

How can it be more info ? you're supposed to only give what the player was seeing.

It is a bit easier to see on a snap rather than having to rely on chat information to check back what was what imo. Tiny difference if you know the map. Bit more annoying if it's an USA2.1 or a Hive map though.

It depends on what they tell you. But, sometimes the fort can be confusing and if they tell you where they forted, they may reveal more. It's a funny quirk of fog that the fort is always a ? in the log even if it happens at a space adjacent to yours.

You could see what the board looked like as you finished your last turn, you can see what it looks like as you start your next turn. Why is it the other person's duty to tell you information you can see for yourself?

Oh I didn't realise this was specifically only about first turns.

idk I'd never heard of this until this thread. Judging by this thread it appears to be some thing people in clans do. I don't think you could expect the average CC player to have even heard of this courtesy, so I'm not sure it really passes as even an unwritten rule.

I always figured if I set up a 1v1 fog game and later find out my opponent got the first turn, them's the breaks. I can always infer the area they might have focused in during turn one by seeing where the highest concentration of ? terts is.

I’ve always found USA2.1 to be easy to read, but I just “get” some maps…and others take me many games to learn (CR or KCII for instance).
