Team Play

I'm sure this has veen beaten to death in the past but as usual I missed the discussion.

As most of you know if a team member deadbeats, his or her armies are given to the other team member/members....ok I don't quite agree with this but it makes sense.

The play should benefit team members in a team game right?

Then why must a team member attack another to control a continent? Even worse, lose armies trying to take control of a country when the other member would gladly give it up.

I think a country with one army should be able to surrender itself to another team member if agreed upon.

The other team member would still lose an army of course.

Yeah, I agree. That is a rather silly rule. Perhaps if a team controls a continent, the member with the most nations captured on that continent, or in the event in a tie, the first member on the list (i.e. most senior member on that team) should get the bonus armies.

Well that's a little over the top, I agree one team member has to control all of the countries in a continent to get it's bonus.

Your idea is good, but there is a flaw. If I'm heavily fortified in a choke point, but you take over most of the country, I'd have to transfer all my armies away from the choke point before I could surrender it.

Why would I do that? Wouldn't we be working together?

But one of us has to control the country.

Let's say we're on a team and we just took over North America. You control Greenland, I control Alaska, and Central America. You want to transfer control over to me, but in order to do that, you'd have to leave Greenland with 1 army.

and?

And then Europe would invade and NOBODY would have control of the continent.

Well if I'm leaving greenland with one army Europe is the only place I can go.

I set up a barricade in Iceland.

So what you're saying is, the inherent weakness that's created when transferring armies is something the players will have to work around.

Obviously.

All I want is to be able to take a partners country without the possibility of losing more than the 1 army doing so.

Awaits Andy's link to another thread where a half assed answer is served up.

Oh, I get it. You have to do that anyway under normal play. All you're doing is eliminating the chance aspects of taking over territories. I was thinking about the problem from the opposite direction, which is why I didn't see the logic behind what you were suggesting.

The only snaggle I can see now is that you can zip through your team mate's territory, sacrificing a single piece at each area along the way. Which is something you could never do through your own territory, which is somewhat illogical. Why can you speed through a friendly country when you're completely stangnant if you're surrounded only by your own areas?

Of course, you could do this in team play anyway, but at least you'd risk a few bad dice rolls along the way.

yeah i've lost a lot of armies taking out my partners'. i almost lost a game cuz it took me like 15 armies just to take out 1 country so i could even start to take over Europe. now i'm barely crawling my way back

I disagree. If you want the continent you have to take it. Make your plans accordingly. If controling a continent is that important to you in a team game then be prepared to pay the price.

Thanks for nothing Roger.

Semp, by your thinking if a player deadbeats his or her armies should become neutral right?

I am not sure about deadbeats. My comment was meant for a team that was playing.

Deadbeat partner is another problem. The partner of the deadbeat already has a big disadvantage by playing by himself for at least 3 turns. The game could be over by then.

If my partner ever deadbeats I will divorce her.

My point is it's a giant advantage for the team in team play.

If team play is going to cater to team members they should be able to give up countries with a single army if so desired.

I am not sure that I agree with you but I do see your point. It could be such a big advantage if the team happened to get S. America and Aussie on the inital placement. Maybe if you were only allowed one country per turn.
