Hostility

I have played at other gaming sites that have forums, but among all of them none have a more unfriendly and hostile tone than the one constantly on display at this website. Does anyone know why this would be?

I don't think it's because of the competetive nature of the game. Chess is more competetive, deeper, and requires greater skill and emotional investment than does Conquer Club. All chess site forums I have seen are much different than forums here. Most have forums that are an uplifting, friendly, and positive place to be, and have nice discussions going on about best moves in certain situations, etc. Also, many young people engage in chess on the internet. So, I don't think it's just the prepubescent age pool Conquer Club appears to draw heavily from.

Does anyone have a solid idea of why people's attitudes at this site suck so completely?

Thanks.
General Quigley

No idea, except maybe it is the more direct nature of the working class playing this game as opposed to the hoity toity playing the cerebral game of CHESS.

I tend to overlook class distinctions and so failed to realize that people who played here were predominantly working class, or children with working class parents unable to provide a better example. That could indeed account for what I have observed. Thank you sincerely for your response; it was immensely helpful.

part of it is the history behind the site and such. Just how people have been to each other let to this. Not all sections are like this granted. ;) Like Mafia Games isn't hostile, while we are a bit groupy

Yeah, we're not hostile at all.

But don't think about trying to go there.

If you're comparing this site to chess sites, I would guess that, at least some of the differences stem from the fact that you can't blame anything other than ability for a loss in chess, while here, there are many, many other things to blame.

In all seriousness, chess players can be extremely hostile, some mostly in a passive/aggressive manner. I think Quigley has his head in a dark place if he doesn't see the pretentiousness of his precious chess sites. I like the free-for-all of this site, and the games are varied and fun. If Quigley wants to play, then get too it. If he wants to sit around and complain about the "hostility" of us low life children, then leave and go play chess with some more cultured adult group. Nobody is forcing him to stay.

Hello, General Quigley. :)

Thank you for this thoughtful post. It is always a pleasure to read your posts; I find them to be the most intelligent, well-written posts on this site, and always with the best of intentions for all parties involved.

Why is this site such an embarrassingly hostile environment, you ask?

Unfortunately, it is because many of the so-called "moderators" are smart-alecs, are rude and arrogant, abuse their authority, cheat, and stalk and harass innocent members. Not all, but a significant number of them engage in these shameful activities, and this sets a very bad precedent for the site overall.

In short, they (again, I am not referring to all of them) are not qualified, in terms of maturity or human social graces, to accomplish the difficult tasks set out before them. Their jobs require adult-level intelligence and composure, qualities in which, unfortunately, some of them are found to be utterly lacking.

They are not held responsible, by and large, for their childish, spiteful, and low-class patterns of behavior, and are given free reign to terrorize any innocent member who they arbitrarily decide to pick on (Wicked is the one exception to this rule -- although she did have a pretty free reign herself to cause trouble for a while there! May God have mercy on her soul).

The fish rots first at the head:

If you put qualified individuals in charge, then their examples will inspire correct behavior, site-wide. If you put snot-nosed brats with underarm hair in charge, then you get chaos, hatred, and burgeoning flame wars, which is basically where this site is headed, thanks to these unqualified posers.

You reap what you sow; this expression applies tenfold to anyone in a position of supposed "authority" over others.

More just actions like the ones taken against the petty (former) cheater, stalker, harasser, and abuser of authority "Wicked" should be taken against such so-called "moderators" as "Lancehoch," "Killmanic," "Cicero," and "Fuzzy Pengui."

Please forgive the harsh language and brutal honesty, but the truth is sometimes painful.

I hope you have a wonderful day, gentle friends!

Now, if klobber's post doesn't stand your hair on end, Quigley, you don't know up from down. I think my direct statement to you was clear, concise, and informative. Klobber's post, however, is the work of a real deviant. Stay out of his basement. Also, haven't you every flown a yak before?

Timminz comes pretty close to the reason. I have played chess and euchre and poker and countless other games on line. The difference in CC (or Risk here) is that wether you win or not in this game is often totally outside of your control. Its a game of dice and cards and , sometimes, clueless opponents who sometimes decide who wins. Even the best players can never be in control of how they will fare.
The badges and points enforce the competiveness. The ability to anominously bad mouth and degrade a person enables us all to 'act badly' sometimes.
But . . in the end its only a game. If you want enlightenment and an uplifting experience I suggest staying away from open games and perhaps just playing people you like to play with and forget the forumn here altogether. There is usually very little here to make anyone 'feel' better about playing Risk.

just keep in mind that the viewpoints of some do not reflect the viewpoints of the majority of CC. In my opinion a post such as this that is calling out hostile people on CC will result in hostile people answering. most people who enjoy playing the game more do so and focus on the game so for the most part, they are more quiet.

The topic you have brought up is completely biased and seems like you have already based your opinion on a few.

In the, close to, year and a half I've been on CC, I've seen a new breed of players emerge.... It seems that a lot of these newcomers are hell-bent to disrupt games, single out players and/or teams to attack, regardless of whether it really benefits them or not, etc. etc.

As many of you may know, I've been known to go off a time or two myself, mostly out of frustration with the dice or players who don't have the balls to attack the leader(s) and instead only help them win by attacking other players.

In catering to its members, CC moderation, in my opinion, has been much too lenient in tolerating the "Flame Wars" mentality that exists on this site.
Not to mention the simple fact that, regardless of who defends it with whatever technical BS they offer, the dice are streaky and have ruined the experience for many, including myself.

I've noticed many people getting into slagging matches, but apart from some genteel repartee, I've not found much abuse hurled at myself.

Maybe I don't deserve it.

Hmm: can't find a "smug" smiley.

[thinks] will they all start with the personal insults now? Surely not, not just because i said not many people insult me. That would be childish.

Being "smug" is nothing to be ashamed of. Now hubris, that is something to be ashamed of. Lying, cheating, and arbitrariness are close runner ups. See being "smug" is just the result of not caring about anything beyond your container. The others are actions to impose your smugness on others, and fundamentally disrespectful. So be smug, go ahead, enjoy it.

You have obviously never visited real-time strategy forums, such as starcraft and such. This community is very friendly compared to those types.
