Fog of war and diplomacy

My question:
If a game has fog of war enabled, is it ok to share information in the public chat?

from wikipedia:
The fog of war is a term used to describe the level of ambiguity in situational awareness experienced by participants in military operations.

The way I see it is that fog of war creates a value for intelligence of the board, which can used against other players. I see it as shrewd diplomacy and strategy to selectively reveal information i see, or even try to deceive others about the state of the board; there by shaping the actions of other players to my advantage.

Thoughts?

Yes, it is ok to put whatever you want into the game chat.

The guidelines for what is acceptable here are stated on the rules page. If you want, you can Foe people who reveal information and you can rate them however you feel appropriate.

It depends on what the other people think of diplomacy, although it is not technically against the rules. I once stated that someone got a bonus in chat (first one of the game) that me and another player had been struggling over for a long time. Nothing was said in chat about this, but I did receive a bad rating (who cares?), so at least I got to find out that the person did not like it.

But there, I was at my own fault. The bonus was worth just 1 and it made absolutely no difference. I would say that you should only do it when there is an advantage to it, or in a situation where one person is a huge leader on the board. It is just up to you to determine.

Well the answer is quite simply that it is fully allowed for in the rules, but unfortunately you will most often receive a bad rating for doing it. :(

Yes, it is okay. But most people will give you a bad rating for it. If you're about to be eliminated, and then you tell everyone where you are.. that kind of gives the game away. And it sucks to lose a game cause of a bad opponent.

Merrijk,

Absolutely agree, and if folks ding you in ratings for it are just sore losers or sore winners too), it adds tremendously to the dimension of diplomacy in a fog of war game, much more so than is possible in a transparent game

That never occurred to me (which is embarrasing, considering that I'm a serving Officer), but you're absolutely right... and to hell with the ratings. 8-)
This adds an entirely new dimension to gameplay for me.

See, I asked this question before, and got the same response.

But I would also like to point out that bonuses are declared in the game chat, and on most maps someone paying attention can completely overcome FoW.

Now, declaring that you found someone with a huge stack at a certain location, I don't know, that might be a little different.

I disagree with most of you here. although its not against the rules, to me, its poor tactics. the point of fog is to have your movements concealed to all those ecept who ar eon your border. to shout out positions is just a cheap tactics and poor sportmanship (lose like a man and admit defeat by a better player). If you want to know where everyone is and what they are doing, dont play a fog game.

they should also fog the cards because those do give too much away. colors is fine but the locations not so much. Would be nic eif you could disable chat as well in some games cause man its annoying listen to people complain and tell everyone else what to do and how to play. "diplomacy" should call it Bitching losers" cause thats all the chat really becomes a bunch of bitching losers.

To the above poster...

1. Everyone in a game is your enemy (well, you are trying to beat them aren't you?)
2. Enemies are trying to beat you (well, just stating the obvious)
3. If you give information to an enemy (location, troop amounts which you can conceal) they will use it against you

It sort of follows that your enemies will exchange info. I foe people who are too "moral" to save 6 other people in a fog game and let me win in 3 rounds in a game which should have been long and fun.
