Your Favorite 3 Maps---But This Time, "Why?"

Ahoy Folks,

So while perusing the General Dicussion, I noticed the "Favorite 3 Maps" topic had slipped down towards the bottom---and since some discussion I wanted to generate doesn't quite fit in that topic here's a new one!

So, in the above posted topic, it was simply a list of some favorite 3 maps---but what I think is more interesting than just seeing what maps are favored by people---is why maps remain a favorite.

So...why? Why do your top 3 favorite maps remain as your favorites?

For me, they aren't necessarily my top 3 all time, but I'll use them anyways:

Space -- This was one of the first maps I was involved with as Foundry Foreman, and I remember its creation so I've got some fond memories of it. I also just generally enjoyed the theme, and I've enjoyed the game play---shared territories and warp/worm holes made for some interesting games.

Canada -- This is an old map I remember, though I wasn't involved with it's production like Space. But I enjoyed that it was similar to Classic, but different enough to provide some change in game play. The old Canada map, if you rememeber, was pretty horrendous, but I'm glad the REVAMP came along and did it some justice.

Caribbean Islands -- Just a small, simple, quick map. Clean graphics, colorful---I enjoy some random 1vs1's on it from time to time.

So...yours?

Age of Merchants - Suits all game types, and is especially good for 1v1, the neutrals adding to the strategy rather than simply creating roadblocks. Graphics are fine, movement across the map is easy, relatively easy instructions, and lots of nice little bonuses.

Waterloo - Arguably the best map on the site, great graphics, lots of bombard span across the map but choke points when moving armies. Lot's of options for bonuses, and plenty of opportunity for the 1v1 player going second to pull in a win.

American Civil War - A lot of scope for shifting play, with cross-over bonuses, lots of little bonuses, and a unique one-way attack pattern through the ships. Plays well on all settings, suits fog and sun, and makes for interesting games in any card setting.

Totally agree, I love this map for dubs.

Agreed. This is a very well-made map. I consider it to be a bit of a litmus test for players. If you can't be bothered to read, and/or comprehend this map, you likely don't pay enough attention to your games.

Midgard - The best graphics style for a map in my opinion, absolutely stunning work of art. This map simply brings back a lot of memories for me when I was still a noob... if only I could go back to those days of losing 80% of my games... :(

I will end it there. I can't decide to choose any others because I love so many maps for a combination of graphics/gameplay that they are impossible to compare.

Waterloo- he best map on cc due to its difficulty.
AOR 2- not as difficult as waterloo but much quicker to play
Chicago- a very fun map that also isnt as easy as some may think

Supermax Prison Riot: I love the huge maps since I play a lot of 8-player games, so that puts it in my wheelhouse right away. Add to that the "areas for a bonus" aren't grouped together AND you get armies for a "partial bonus" (in other words, you don't have to own the entire bonus), which I think this adds a tremendous bit of strategy to the game and at the same time very much gets rid of the "drop wins the game" problem. Plus the mass of neutrals (guards) slows down the game to where strategy really is the final determinant almost every time on this map.

WWII Ardennes: Again, I love the huge maps. This one is similar to Supermax in that you can own a "partial bonus", and I like that aspect. Plus it's a unique design.

WWII Europe: What can I say...it's a big-ass map. Nothing particularly different design-wise, but it's sheer size makes me love it.

I like maps that I can win on. Basically, me + foggy + freestyle = rape.

Age of Realms 1 - Just pile armies on that castle, then when you see that two people have made contact you wait for them to waste each other, then sneak attack and take all those resources they worked so hard for, and screw 'em both over.

Feudal War - Just keep building armies in your bubble, then when someone breaks all the neutrals and comes in to conquer you, BAM you wipe out their entire force with one fell swoop, and you've got another castle. Rinse and repeat for every other fool who tries to attack.

Conquer Man - Get the cupcake, stay on the cupcake, and after the inevitable build game that happens on this map, you've got like 150 armies that can completely annihilate anything. But nobody ever knows because it's just 1 territory.

I am such a campy player.

Feudal War: my best map and I think the most fun map to play (with fog) doesn't matter going first or second you can still end up winning while more players in a game is exciting and adds different strategies to the mix.

Supermax: Wonerful idea, not one of my best maps but definetely one of my favourites to play.

Dust Bowl: Extremely unique game play and wonderful looking map.

Battle of Actium: I think I'm in the minority, but I really enjoy this map. Works well for all game sizes--I'm using it as a home map for different tourneys using 2, 3, 4, and 5 player games, and it's big enough that the 6-8 player games work well also. And of all the maps I've played extensively, it's the one on which I've won the most, so of course I'm going to enjoy it.

Waterloo: Agree with the others who enjoy the difficulty. There are so many different strategic points to take into account with this map. Yet another map that plays equally well in a 2 player game or an 8 player game. It's definitely a love-hate thing--a lot of people don't get the map and can't stand it--but those of us who do get it love it.

Supermax: Prison Riot!: Love the look, the gameplay, the whole nine yards. Just a very cool concept that makes for very interesting games. My only complaint is that, in a 1v1 game, you can end up with hugely unbalanced drops, and if the drop really favors the player going first, and that player's got some experience on the map, the game's over. But there are a ton of maps on CC about which you could say the same thing.

I had a really hard time narrowing the list down to 3. I think I probably could have given a top 10 and still felt like I was leaving some really good maps off the list.

USA: This has always been my favorite map, and I think it always will be. I've had the most success on it, and I feel like even though it is a straightforward map that I've found some solid and dependable strategies for where to start, where to move to, and how to back people into corners. It's also a Conquer Club original, so how can you pass it up?

Charleston: The most beautiful map on the site. It's big enough for team games (something I'm getting into a little more), has enough room to make 2-player games worthwhile and not always winnable on the drop, and the visual appeal is unparalleled by anything yet to come out of the Foundry.

Indochina: A strange choice, I know, but for some reason I always go back to this map every so often for a good terminator game or two. The linear gameplay works nicely for me, and I think I may just be lucky on the map in general.

Interesting choices and explanations thus far---I like 'em! I'm curious to see how this progresses---and if it'll continue to repeat some of the maps mentioned or if new ones will sneak in...

I don't think I could narrow it to three. I think the variety is what keeps CC interesting.
