Am I missing something

Hello,
I'm new to the site and forum but have played risk alot as a younger lad :)
I've played a few games now and have done ok in some but awful in others...

The most recent game I joined made me realise that the game may have a weakness...in Risk, you take turns choosing spots and have equal footing using strategy to place your pieces. In the game I just started, the randomness set the other player up with several bonus regions and on their first turn received 16 units...on my first round, I was already weakened by his large bonus and I only received 8 units and am now fighting an uphill battle (not to mention all my attacks were for not as my rolls were ALL terrible)

Do I write this game off or try to secure a few locations and start reinforcing them?
Thanks in advance

Never give up! Never give in!

Truthfully, why not make the attempt? If he's got that dominating of a position, you're not going to end it much quicker by just giving up, and he'll certainly appreciate the fight. Be a good sport.

As Woodruff said, never give in. go down fighting. give it your best shot. Stick at it.

Thats what I do.

Thanks for the quick responses...I hate the idea of giving in and I do play to the last man...but when the game starts so skewed I start to wonder how many games like this I will see here...seeing as I am new here, I'm worried that the person with the first go gets the major advantage as they reap their bonuses on the first round before I have even started...

With that said, any suggested maps/games for a noob

In one-vs-one matches, the first person certainly has a distinct advantage, especially in "unlimited fortification" games, so I would avoid those if you're worried about first-person-advantage.

My best suggestion though would be to avoid one-vs-one matches. With multiple players, the significance of the drop is drastically lowered (though you will still see the occasional great drop) and while the first player still has an advantage, with multiple people "having a shot at them", that is diminished a great deal, as well.

Personally, I prefer the huge maps with 8 players.

You will play a large number of seemingly rigged games in your time at CC, especially playing 1 vs 1. If you're one to get aggravated by poor starting positions, don't play sequential 1 vs 1, ever.

To counter this, I recommend team games, they are rarely decided by a good drop, and, for me, are a lot more fun!

well, I haven't been around that long, but I think that playing with more folks in a single game can be a problem too if you are the last of 6 players to take your turn for instance. By then you can be drastically reduced to a fraction of what you started with. This of course also depends on the type of map, if there are many territories or few. I don't give up on those games and play them through (100% turns taken I'm proud to say), but really, I don't look forward to them. Who wants to get stuck in a game that lasts 30-40 rounds when you are at 1/3 power of the strongest player. I'm sure it is possible to come back from this but I guess maybe I lack the patience. Maybe I'll never be a great player because of this. Good gaming all.
