This is going to sound pretty basic, but just in case...
You essentially cannot leave 1's behind, even moreso than on a normal map. Your borders have access to TWO of your territories rather than one, so you have to be a lot more balanced in your defense. Try to gain all three terits in a province.

the corner provinces are good because, if all of the adjacent provinces are urs or neutral, then ur opponent can't see in a fog game whether u've taken the one that starts neutral. it's more difficult to do this with one of the centrally-located provinces.
