Another site has a classic... Better definition, hasbro???

Strategygamenetwork.com is a similar risk site to cc ( although they suck major donkey balls and charge 62 a year for premium)

they have a classic map with basically the same territory names and shapes as our old classic, and the actual risk gameboard

here is a pic of it:

as a question, does adding a few territs to a copyrighted layout take it out of danger for a lawsuit? I assume not, because we wouldve just added Antarctica to our old classic and be done with it...

Just wanted to know before I started something in the foundry ;)

EDIT:

here is the second one;

Actually, their most played map has the exact same layout as classic, and uses a world map, but just uses different names ( ie, middle east is now just Iraq) correct me if I'm wrong...

Game play is different though. The extra connections will ruin the ability to shield someone in ausi and other places and make the map more offensive. (Or ausi will be harder to hold in dubs [or standard 6 players games if your a noob]).

yeah, they probably havent got big enough to get the ire of hasbro, they are still pretty new it looks like. looks like a shitty cc rip-off made by a 13 year old with paint.

were you talking about the second one too? I'm sure if we could connect sa to aust. Without getting sued we'd do it..

Hmm, if anybody wants to scout their site for more copyrighted stuff, that would be great.

The gameplay changes are actually directly ripped from Risk 2 (Hasbro).

Are old TV shows still protected by copyright?

yes, but stargate isnt that old.. but here is what i found about copyrights:

US Copyrights wrote:As a general rule, for works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years

so yeah, copyrights last a long time..

but im sure in time, they will grow the ire of hasbro, however i have a hard time thinking that they would view them as much of a threat...

a little factoid for you, ConquerClub is the only Risk clone site out there without a Classic map.

But Hasbro really has better things to do then to actively protect their IP from small time, craptastic, sites. I have even seen Risk clonse sites that have the actual Risk map, that says RISK on it. Crazy.

1. CC doesn't have the classic map cause Hasbro would sue us.
2. Hasbro doesn't bother with "small time, craptastic, sites."

Since they view us as enough of a threat to actually sue us if we have classic, we must be doing pretty well!

Depends on the wording of the copyright. Copyright protects the idea. In some cases, copyright suits have been won for use of three notes from a copyrighted song, because the notes were distinctive enough to be considered the intellectual property of the original writer.

Use of the attack pattern, for example, could probably be considered a copyright infringement, if Hasbro lawyers wanted to look at Art and Shapes for the pattern.
If they do not want to look that aggressively, then changing just one feature significantly enough could protect the maker from copyright suits.

Many books are copyrighted to the point that copying more than a page could be considered a violation. Some have exceptions in that, if the material is being used for classroom purposes, copying an entire section, such as a chapter, for a handout, is allowable. In some cases, copying a chapter is technically illegal but people do it anyway, because, "who wants to sue a teacher for introducing a portion of material to a class?"

Bottom line: if you REALLY want to know the answer, contact Hasbro and ask what is and isn't permissible for use from their Risk game; i.e. ask for the specific copyright wording and have a lawyer interpret it for you.

SGN is where I played before I came here. Compared to the $25, way better maps, and better games (they only have Real Time (equivalent to Speed games) and 2-6 man standard), the site is now laughable. The incident that pushed me over the edge, though, occurred when I tried to submit a map. Their rule is that once a map has the kinks worked out and it has been played 30 times, it goes from Provisional (equivalent to Beta) to official. After 4 months of waiting, it was denied because it hadn't met the 30 game requirement even the the Times Played counter showed 90.

Also, going back, some of their maps look a little familiar...

Maybe we should make a list if all of them... And send them to hasbro

Knowing how lobbyists are in America, they will probably sue the f*ck outta those poor bastards if they don't take their classics down
