Politics Is The New Taboo (THINK OF THE CHILDREN)

Yo, there's something we need to talk about, everyone. Mods too. Pull up a chair.

I keep seeing these threads where the resident board white knights come galloping in and start bellowing about "won't somebody please think of the children" when it comes to independent thinkers who may be a bit hasty in pressing "submit".

So if you're all so concerned with children being exposed to language like "panties in a twist", then why in the hell do you allow such divisive and angry political rhetoric to go unchecked in Turtle Soup? And the worst offender of this kind of vitriol is one of your own!

You all think Flame Wars is better off being gone (and I agree), so why is politics still allowed to run amok in off-topics? It's all contentious flame baiting anyway, and people get really, really upset about it too! You can't even make a light hearted joke about how ridiculous political arguments can often be without someone phlipping out and possibly phainting with disgust!

I fail to see how dropping f-bombs and telling each other to untwist our panties is any different than indoctrinating children to think that behaving like this is making any kind of statement about anything except their own debilitating struggle with FAS:

Image

(note to kids reading this thread-- Obama went to Columbia and then Harvard, two of the most selective, rigorous, and respected universities in the WORLD -- not just the USA. And he got in on his own merits and had to take out loans to finance it, unlike the previous President, who was just a legacy and never worked hard. Ask yourselves. Where did "Random Gun Nut From New England" receive his education, if at all? Who would you rather be like, an attention-whore with a handgun who obviously has enough time on his hands to attend a town hall to intimidate people, or an Ivy-League educated self-made person capable of achieving whatever you want --albeit with years of hard work and discipline-- even PRESIDENT.)

So, honestly, if you're worried about the kids (unless that's just an excuse being used to continue to ostracize and condemn those who drop colorful metaphors on occasion), then I think we should discuss this.

Also, it's worth noting that there are threads with scantily clad women, men, and even *shudder*, *gag*, CARTOON ANIMALS ENGAGED IN SEXY TIME BEHAVIOR (actually, that's rather hilarious).

So where's the line get drawn? Obviously a culture of neo-con worship has been fostered here, thanks to the Robespierre emulation of a recently demoted certain mod who will remain unnamed. I think that is far more dangerous to childhood development than learning the phrase "don't get your panties in a twist", which is about as offensive as "keep your shirt on".

Anyway, let's discuss.

I agree with a lot if what you wrote. However, in GD I don't think language is the big issue ...many posters write profanity here all the time (including those on the hit list/so called hitlist). What gets you here is upsetting the apple cart. Even then they don't tend to ban you for your use of language..but rather for trolling/going off-topic. I got banned for going off-topic, not for the various words I used related to the word 'snatch'.

Also direct flaming + 'anything even vaguely offensive' can equal a ban. Those that say the mods play favourites...well you know those chaps often bait and are sometimes bloody insulting (at least to someone..I can't say I ever personally give a shit), but they rarely actually go completely direct (key point) and even more rarely go direct and write profanities.

So in the end here you should play the system. I don't know if off-topics is so different, but you posted this in GD so...

Dear pimpdave,

I don't like you, but you are going to force me to re-examine my original opinion. well put, and im regularly offended by topics in off-topic, but i dont think it should be changed, i like the way that is. i like to know who the political wackos are so that i can avoid conversations with them about it.... but while typing and thinking here simultaneously (ive learned a new skill!!!), a good question pops into my mind... now i may be completely wrong in my evaluation here as i dont go to off-topics much unless a topic just screams at me. but lately, doesnt it seem like its easier to keep a post on topic in off-topic than in general discussion? *shudder* that sentence was a preposition nightmare.... anyway, yeah, its morning and im stoned and i dont remember what my point was....

What is this supposed to be ? How does explaining obamas educational path compare to a new englander defending his constitutional rights.? It`s amazing the conclusion you draw from looking at a picture. Its also quite clear to me that the conclusions you have drawn are just assumptions with no facts to back them up. Is this what you want to teach the children ?
To Judge a book by its cover. Clearly goes against MLK`s vision..

Its a shame you hate america. By the sound of your name PIMPDAVE , you must be fairly young . Is this what they teach you in public schools today ? To hate america..

When i read the opening few paragraphs it seemed you had a valid point , in regards to the language being used around children.. But yet you were able to slip in the word Attention-Whore in a paragraph you directed at the kids. Mommy, whats an attention-whore?...

ARE ALL LIBERALS HYPOCRITS :?:

Someone has completely missed the point, someone has, in fact, walked off in the wrong direction to search for the point in an entirely different country than where the point currently resides.

Or this is a very clever reply that illustrates the point perfectly, but I have a feeling that this is not the case.

i think the point of danfranks post is that if you disagree with him, then you hate america.
