I've just been challenged to a game on City Mogul - tips?

... Just gazing at the map I figure the first tip is to decline the challenge but it's a little late for that.

Anyway, It's Freestyle, 1-1, fog of war, no spoils. The neutral count is huge but I got alot of men too so I am going to assume my challenger gets the same ammount of men that I did. With so many ?s I just deployed a my 1 troop (how does that work exactly? In every other map that I've played, I get like 3 at least lol) and ended my turn.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

My advice is don't play that board. Its a specialist board. Some boards are quite easy for begginers, but some like that one aren't. I've avoided it in over 800 games played because I know I would get schooled for my first 5-10 games, possibly more.

The Age of Realms boards, Feudal War board, and Battle for Iraw are also boards to be cautious of.

Thanks for the input. So that leads to: "What makes 1 map a specialist map over any other map?"

I did play feudal on one and was lucky enough to pull out a win.

Specialist boards require a certain strategy to achieve victory, while others you can just simply outwit your opponent without knowing tricks or secrets to the map.

dont waste men unecesarrily taking neutrals, makes no sense killing 20 troops to get a 5 bonus, thats rule #1

OK, first there are 2 rough camps here. One group likes to play the "standard" maps (think Classic variations) and considers just about everything else inferior or only for the experienced. The other group LIKES variety and is not afraid of maps with various odd rules.

I am firmly with the second. I like the "unusual" maps. like AOR2. I don't find them difficult unless you are one who refuses to read the rules. I consider them more fun and, in some cases, even easier than most of the other maps, largely because those who play the standard maps are very good.

A "specialty" map can be anything not "standard" .... all of the conquest maps (those that begin with lots of neutrals, AOR2, Fuedal, etc.), those with unusual bonuses (Age of Merchants, Poker Club, etc.), and various other specialty issues.

A "specialty" map can also be one of those that have only 1-2 strategies. (AOR1 and City Mogul are the 2 biggies, Circus Maximus is borderline). The term you really need to worry about is farming. There are people who get decent at a map and then "invite" new users to play ... and POUNCE! They often take one of the "odd" maps.

The trick is to learn to play each map. One you have played a few times, then you can decide if you like it or not. I'd be quite wary of anyone who "invites" you to a map you have not tried, with the exception of new maps when they first come out. (a lot of people send out invites then because they want to try the maps with people they know play decently or are just present).

i exclusively play doodle earth now and days with a few wordl 2.1 here and there.

dont think this counts as farming, it was just a friendly challenge, i did ask her if she wanted to pick a different map

The man speaks true! lol. He did warn me that he was experienced in the map and that it might not be fair. I didn't grasp the concept that any 1 map can be less fair than another and as a result, I found myself cluelessly trampled. I never thought I could lose 70 men to 20 (well, 4 survived!) but I don't think it would have made a difference in the long run.

It's the way games go, you win some, you lose some.

1. Yes, you are to assume that he gets the same amount of men.
2. Don't join.
3. Try the map in sequential with no fog.
3a. Never play a new map on fog, play it sunny first
3b. Never play a new map freestyle speed.
4. Don't go through the (I think they're called subways), the ones with 30 on them, let the other guy do that. Just build for several turns.
5. If you are going to accept invites to freestyle speed games, after you know this map, get firefox browser, greasemonkey add on, and install the script 'clickable maps'.
Practice with clickies and get fast at it, then play this guy on that map, but sunny, not fog.

So, you have some learning to do. Play city mogul against your buddies first

One final note, cards are irrelavent on city mogul, don't waste your time worrying about them. They aren't worth the time they take to turn in, literally.
