'real world' map

Has anyone thought to create a map based on the real world. ie. one where the value of territories reflects their economic/industrial/military capability in the real world.

The layout I am thinking of would be somewhat like World 2.0 map. Except China and India would be divided up into smaller pockets (like USA and Canada are already on that map).

There would be no continental bonuses. But some territories would have higher values, based on their economic/industrial/military capability. In a very simple version the most developed territories eg. Western Europe regions, Japan, Korea, the USA regions, some China regions, oil-rich-countries, would get +2 each. Middling territories like those of Eastern Europe would get +1, the territories covering the poorest regions would simply count towards the standard territorial bonus.

There would also be a logistical/governance bonus of +1 for each territory adjacent to another friendly territory.

No, the countries would still be in normal proportion. Just the bonuses would be different.

If you base the gameplay on real world features... How would you ensure fair drops?

Well I don't know how the code works in map-making. But ideally you would set it up one of two ways: either so can only drop on rich territories or so you can only drop on poor territories. Remaining lands would be assigned neutral until conquered.

I'm not sure I like this idea... Can't put a finger on what exactly is the matter :?

But it's surely fresh! =D>

interesting. I would make it so that there are 8 different "super powers" that you start on and get an auto deploy of X. it would basically be a conquer map in my idea, so if you held all "super powers" or eliminated all other players you win.

i think you should make the map on national debt and see how that one turns out.

Well I am not a map-maker, I am not going to make it myself. Anyone is welcome to take the idea and run with it but I think the original concept outlined in my first post is the best. The values would be military value to an occupying army: a combination of economic output (USA regions, Japan, West Europe, East China) and oil deposits (e.g. Middle East, Indonesia, some USA regions, SouthWest Russia).

If you had 8 arbitrary super-powers that is not the 'real world' but a different idea altogether.

i really like this idea and i'm willing to work with it, i'm not good at grpahics, so i'll need someone for that, but i'll do the xml and i'll think about gameplay and how to get it working while still keeping it original and somewhat fair (it's not hard to get it at least as fair as luxembourg tho, where at least 1 person usually starts out with a continent)

i don't really like the idea of fixed territories on a map like this tho, as it would feel too much like feudal, not that i don't like feudal, but i like the idea of having something fresh.

Agreed fixed territories would not be as good. I reckon if you partition USA and China and Russia into smaller pieces there should be enough 'rich' territories to allow random deployment.

But whatever the case it will be interesting to see what you come up with... :)
