Greater Seattle Area (Draft)

Hi - I tried to read the guidelines to the best of my ability, hope this post will be kosher. Someone suggested a Seattle map about a year and a half ago.

(viewtopic.php?f=242&t=39652&p=2595316&hilit=seattle#p2595316)

It got a lukewarm reception, (although 51% voted "yes" they'd like to see one developed) but the person suggesting it hadn't actually done any work on a map, he just posted an actual map of the Seattle area. He hasn't been on since last August, so I thought I'd go ahead and put forth a concept to see if there's any interest.

It's nothing really glamorous, just a basic map, but I have taken a little time to try to make sure that the dynamics are at least somewhat close to what they should be. I'm not much of a graphics person, or really all that serious of a gamer, so if anyone likes it and wants to run with it (with whatever changes are suggested) be my guest!

P.S. Probably goes without saying, but it is intended that territories cannot attack diagonally at corner sections - so for example, Bellevue (red section) cannot attack North Redmond. There are 56 territories, 32 total bonuses.

hey man, im not a huge fan of plain jane city maps.. i mean there are tons of not so vanilla citys you could do... that being said... this could work.

I personally (take this with a grain of salt as there are more seasoned ppl that will reply and add input) would like to see more barriers.

good luck, hope you follow through.

Ok, first the positive: Nice first draft... clean and simple. One can understand the gameplay with a glance.

Then the negs... The gameplay doesn't really have anything of Seattle in it, except the geography. Where's the space needle? I would like to see more features of Seattle, incorporated in the gameplay.

For the graphical style, I suggest lots of grunge ;) :D

Ya, I know it's pretty barebones. I was more focused on the logistics involved with getting it down to a manageable number of sections, this is my first try at making a map. (That's actually a very good question as far as where the Space Needle is - it could very well be sitting on the border between "Queen Anne" and "Belltown", but I think I would probably put it on Queen Anne.) Well like I said I'm not a talented graphics guy, but I guess if nobody else decides to pick it up I could work on it some more.

As far as the barriers go, it was originally suggested that some freeways and major parks could be used - but of course they'd have to be put in first. I divided many of the territories along major street and freeway lines, in particular green and violet are divided by I-5 which could be added in. I originally had connected Mercer Island to South Bellevue (as well as Factoria) since it is connected by a freeway but decided I wanted fewer connections there. Same thing with Eastlake to Wallingford. We could always pretend another one of the bridges had been destroyed and remove it as well if necessary. If this map did get further along, I would think we would probably try it without any further barriers to begin with. Hey, I just had a funny thought - we could put in a language barrier around the International District! Ha, I kill me. ;-)
