Theres an update on the bottom of page two.
Well I came up with the idea while playing Rome Total War to create a mini-map. It focuses on Rome's Rise to power. However as the borders of some countries were much different I decided that maybe it was best to get rid of continents (or the geographical equivalent) altogether. So instead I came up with capitals - If you control them you get extra guys. The idea here is so players won't stick to the continents that are pre-made, instead they will make their own. Rules, as you can see, are a very big work in progress. But this is the map right now.
This is the skeleton - To show who can attack who in a simplified manner.
Me being such a noob at this, is asking for help. Does this look good so far? I don't mean image-wise, I mean map-wise. I know the actual image is terrible.

It's a nice idea, but try to get more territorries. I also hope that isnt the best you can do visually.

...It really isn't. I might expand the map a bit but one of my peeves is huge maps, so I might keep it small.

If you want to keep it small, thats fine, but 23 territorries is too small. Ireland has 32 territorries. If you add 9 or 10 territorries it will be fine mechanicly.

what happens if lucky joe, who starts first starts with three of these capitals? continents are there for a reason, if you started with a load of bonus giving squares, you would pretty much win the game.
Or you could do it, owning 2 capitols +1 army
3 +2
4+3
5+4
6+8
(assuming there were 6 capitols)
you can't have one territory alone giving out a bonus.

I like the idea of a small map. We could really use something like this on CC. I would increase the map by 1 territory only. Not sure if I added them right, but it looks like 23 territories total.
24 would be:
3 player game = 8 per person
4 player game = 6 per person
5 player game = 4 per person (4 nuetral)
6 player game = 4 per person
23 would leave a lot of nuetrals so I would raise it by 1 territory and nothing over that.
The only problem I see from capitals might be the random troop deployment giving somebody the egde. I'd still play this map though.

The idea is to give a bonus for capitals and a bonus for territories. I want to keep the number of capitals small. I'm adding some ten territories. Somewhat W.I.P. (but you didn't know that)

I think luck will have more of a factor however i stil think this will be interesting because in real life an empire with many capitals will be a more vicious force as it builds reputation as an empire. This is especially relevant for the Roman empire, and for one map this would be interesting.
Make it at least 32 territories or it will not work. And the so called "heavy weight" of the map foundary will find it easier to comment there is a slightly more designed version as they can see the style of the map. For instance BeNeLux looks very different from the Netherlands map yet of similar areas a comment made for one map would not work at all for another. So design it slightly yourself and then see what everybody says.

The only problem with that is that I plan on making several drafts very soon, another one is already in the works based on the ideas here, so I don't want to spend too much time trying to make it look nice (I trash the drafts, after all).

A small map can work, it would just be geared toward 3 and 4 player games. On a standard 42 country map, 6 players start with 7 countries each. On a small 24 country map 3 players would start with 8 countries each, and 4 players would each get 6 countries. So it is not unreasonable at all to make a 24 country map aimed to attract 3 player games. Also 3 player and 6 player games are by far the most popular standard settings so a 3 player oriented map would be a good thing.
But yes, I really think you need to make it 24 countries instead of 23 to limit neutral territories.

I think if there were to be 24 countries, an escalating cards game could allow a player to easily win the game with little effort, even if he were to have maybe only one country.. I think this would be a problem..
But aside from that.. I think if you were to leave out bonuses for continents as a whole, and maybe chose key spots(with some sort of significance(maybe geopolitical significance durning the time period)) it could be interesting.. but then, rather than simply one capital providing bonuses, maybe bonuses can be gained by holding two or three corresponding capitals(or key locations) or possibly an escalating bonus, depending on how many of these you hold.
Edit: This is what I meant.. Bedplay suggested it, but I missed it..

I tried somthing like this ages ago based on the rome total war map

Because then it 'doesn't fit the fluff'. Rome was unbelievably powerful at that point, it doesn't make sense to have it be a war going on. Plus chances are there is a map called europe.

Of course there's a europe map. But you could just make a map of the provinces of Rome at it's height (117 A.D)

Nah I'm going to keep my original idea of the Rise of Rome. I'll probably have another draft later today or early next week.

UPDATE! Here's where the map is at right now. I've included all of europe as a reference. I may make it bigger.
No skeleton right now. Sorry (makes it easier for me to see how it is structured.
Total of 25 territories.

i really like the idea of a small map for quick games, and i think the capitals is an excellent idea. i hope this works out. i think if you made it much bigger, though, it would be too similar to the europe map.

I'm thinking about swithcing the theme from early rome to late rome, when all the barbarians came in and swept across the countryside. Includes: Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Franks, Burgundians, Vandals, and maybe the Angles, Huns and Saxons. So I'm re-doing the names of the areas.

You could have bonuses for holding rome+carthage as this is the aria they mostly faught over
you could also have some sea territories like in the alexander map

I still don't think you understand the main problem, capitals will make it unplayable, trust me. Unless you have it:
2 capitals = + 1 army
3 capital = + 3 army (or something similar,
.etc.
