The 50 States Series: Iowa

While there appears to be several maps already of the United States in whole or regional form it does not appear that any maps at all have been done of just individual states. I had an idea to start a series of maps for each state in the union. A massive project indeed that would go on for quite a long time. Each map theme would be wholly unique to each particular state's identity. It's resources, culture, history, etc. My inspiration for the state map comes from the old school post cards you see of different states. Here's an example.
http://loclstylz.com/postcards/IAmap03.jpgSo the maps would incorporate those sort of graphics to the regions.
So, any thoughts? Too ambitious? Not ambitious enough? I think it would be cool to see multiple cartographers take on different states of their choosing and see how the different styles and designs come together.

Do we really need maps of all of the states? I think they'd end up repetitive quite fast, unless you can come up with unique and interesting gameplay for each.

I don't think a lot of states deserve a map. Arkansas for example.
Well anyway if you want to pick a state and get started go ahead. Let this help inspire you:
viewtopic.php?f=468&t=126233But wait and see how much effort goes into just 1 map before you suggest 50.

I don't have any real expectations that all 50 states will ever be done. But I think it'll be fun to do some of them. I also like the challenge of taking states that are rather geographically plain and making them playable. For example my first choice is.....Iowa. Obviously other states offer more interesting geography.

Yep. That pick would've seemed a lot more arbitrary if I wasn't.

That or no one ever would have picked it. I'm just kidding, I don't mean to hate. Well any way best of luck to ya, I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

A very rough early draft of how Iowa might look.

Yeah I have territory names but when I exported out from ArcGIS the text was getting garbled on some of them so I excluded them for now.
Obviously Iowa's terrain and environment doesn't offer much for impassables other than the rivers. Unless I got creative.

Also the topographic relief shown on the map is from a statewide Digital Elevation Model I have. I thought it added a little more depth to it.

Should I create a new thread for the Iowa map or just use this one?

some states would be okay but what about like those 30 or so square and rectangle-shaped states between the Atlantic and Pacific?

"No! My favourite map is North Dakota!"

I don't think I'm a real big fan of this project. You have some talent, ironsij---I'd rather see it executed on some other ideas.

I'm all for a map on IOWA. Considering I'm from that particular corn field BUT we have the various USA maps already. What would really be nice is a
Louisiana Purchase map. Lewis and Clark and all that.

Yeah I've decided to scrap this one.
Louisiana Purchase would be interesting. I might look into that. I've got two other ideas brewing right now though so we'll see how those initial concepts do on the drawing board.
Toss Iowa to the heap, for now.

hahaha you shouldn't have started with Iowa. 50 states seems like a horrible idea because half of the states are all just rectangles anyway.
