Abstract Map? (not based)

I was thinking of just making a map that does not resemble anything in real life. It would be totally abstract, but would have territories placed such that there would be very interesting strategic choices to be made. The map would probably be in the shape of a disc.

The general idea would be that people would play the map simply because there are so many interesting strategic situations.

Unfortunately I can't really elaborate beyond this, besides actually making the map (which I don't want to do until I get some feedback). The biggest issue, I think, is the fact that the map would be my totally original brainchild, not something based off of any existing geography or map.

What do you guys think? Would this be an interesting thing to at least take a shot at, or am I just insane?

abstract maps are not really appreciated around here. my only advice is to make the image and then ask for feedback. who knows, maybe when people see the image they love it.

Yes, this is what I was thinking...

EDIT: Bah, as I am completely incapable of creating maps, I think this idea is likely not viable...
