U.S. Inter-State Highway

I have an idea about having a map that has the continental U.S. with the inter-state highway system. It would have I-35, I-95, I-90, I-80, I-5, and many others. The "countries" would be major cities and intersections of two or more highways. Every state would have at least one city named and probably more. The territories would be the entire highway or geographically determined.

sounds like it, but it would be different, and I'd Like to own I-75 that road has like 80% of my drive time on it

Kind of, it would just represent more states and more places. I think it would be similar in many ways but different in others.

Bonuses for holding cheesy road-side attractions? World's largest bottle of ketchup? Cadillac Ranch? Ozarkland stores? Graceland? Route 66?
Ooh, a 1950s theme would be perfect for this - the golden era of the automobile! You could call the project Route 66 and really cheese it up, and it would probably attract a greater international audience.

I like the idea but I agree it will be difficult to differentiate from Rail USA. Are you going to use the highways as actual territories, or are you going to just use them to connect the cities? If the former, then I actually could see some crazy different game play... where you get bonuses for controling all the routes into and out of a city... not the city itself.
You could have some special "strategic" transit points, like significant bridges tunnels and even ferries... so like if you had a city like NYC, which has a ton of interstates leading in and out of it, you'd have one non-bonus continent for NYC, surrounded by I-80, I-87, I-93, I-95, etc. The bonus would be to hold all segments of all routes bordering NYC. Put in a non-bonus territory for the ferry, not part of the interstate continent, leading directly into the center NYC territoriy, so that attackers would have an easier time breaking the bonus if they go up the ferry.
For something like I-90, which passes through a few "single interstate" cities... just make a bridge or something, and then have an increasing bonus tied to the number of bridges held (hell, every city has to have at least 1 bridge...) obviously named toll bridged would be a nice touch of authenticity. I see somebody also suggested "attractions"... same idea.

It doesn't need to be like the rail usa map at all...
I would envisage it would probably be more like the Sydney Metro map that i am working on.
If you have roads as terts and terts in between the major highways, you have the makings of a great map i believe.

i read it like 5 years ago, it's a pretty good book.
but yeah, i think the idea of having the highways act as only a part of the map would make it less like rail usa, and therefore more playable overall?

the thought of playing a map like rail usa only roads doesn't excite me.
the thought of playing a map set in the era of grease lightning & happy days and fonzie does, a lot.

This might end up having to be a massive map because there are a lot of interstates and connections!

It could be simplified of course. Still not sure how you will be able to make it all that different from the Rail USA map...
Here are some links/maps for inspiration. (click on the maps for the links)

simplified....not entirely accurate (see comments on link)

more detailed. check out the full size map. crazy!!
