Marching Band

i searched the entire map foundry for this so im pretty sure the idea hasnt been broght up before.

the idea is to have a map of a marching band on a field in some sort of formation with each musician being a territory.

the continents would of course be the different sections oif instruments and things like flags or other auxillery. these could also be sub continents of the more general sections of the band too like woodwinds brass percussion and auxillery

drum majors and section leaders could be implemented too in some way.

and because its marching band , we could really make the formation of the territories however we want. that would also eliminate the problem of the simmilar full orchestra idea with it being basically a flipped over senate map.

which brings me to a idea i have that im not sure is possible yet: moving territories. i saw the idea suggested in the xml modifications and variations thread but the word from lack was a "maybe" and i dont know what that means. but basically it would be applied to this map by haing the band go through a marching drill which would change what territories border which. the map could still be good without the feature so no worries, but it would be awesome if it could happen.

i have some other ideas that are kinda vague in my mind right now so il wait for feedback first

what do you guys think?

Ok when I first saw this I was like wtf what a terrible idea but then I read it through and it sounds awesome! The moving territories sounds crazy. That would be pretty cool if it could be implemented. You should definitely do it if you can.

I'm sure I've seen an orchestra idea before... you could see if there is anything in that discussion worth borrowing?

it would be on a football field as thats what field shows are done in(and the ponly place that moving territories could be implemented if its used)

yeah i saw the orchestra idea. but the makeup between an orchestra and a marching band are different. i might look it over again to see if theres any useful ideas. mostly they just dont apply though.

as for me doing it, im not so sure that i have the abilities. incase you havent noticed, im not very experienced here so i dont know how easily it could be done. if there any threads around here that can help with that that i missed, just let me know and il find my way to them or you can link me.

overall though, it would be better if someone with more experience took up the project. i can always try though.

I think it is a cool idea, and I do know what you mean by moving territories. I do not believe dynamic borders are supported in the current XML engine though. I can't help with graphics, as I am not very good with them, but I could possibly help with XML should I get more experience with all the functions for maps for this game.

this is a much better idea than an orchestra, in my opinion, because a marching band is easy to re-arrange to make sure gameplay is balanced throughout the map.

on the other hand, the orchestra idea that is currently in the scrap heap is a set thing.

first figure out how many territs you want, and what each territ will be, then we can discuss where things should go

you could even make it into a "CC" formation or a star and it would have a nice touch.

brilliant idea especially if the moving bonuses is implemented, but i have a request, my HS band teacher, was rumored (for fun of the band nerds) to kill band students that didnt stand in line, could u have it so by taking the band teacher u get a to attack any student, but it becomes neutral at the end of each round.

Nice Idea! Instead of the band teacher being the attack any, It should be the Drum Major that does that. And yes, I am in Marching Band, and I'm lucky enough to not have a drum major this year.

haha our frum majors were always chill, but it was always fun to see the director yell at the idiot that didnt know what they were doing because they dont read the charts, and forgot their instrument :lol:

We don't see the charts and we don't forget our instruments (except for one time I left my clarinet in my 6th period class, at rehersal I needed a janitor to open the door). We mostly get yelled at for missing a stepoff, not dressing the form, not marching in step, or not making it to your spot in however many counts you have on the wrong foot. We also have a game to play at on Friday, which happens to be our Homecoming game.

On the map, I think there should be a couple people who are out of line, and you get a negitive bonus for it.

we got yelled at for the exact same things, but in a 270 kid band we always had one idiot that was only in band so they hav the minimum number of classes slowed us down like hell

You guys are lucky to have a big band. Our marching band has about 20ish winds, 6 color guard, four in the drum line, and I think around 8 in the pit, not to mention no drum major.

holy crap! no offense but that is small. but on the pother hand we have more ppl to coordinate and we are automatically bumped to the top grouping because of size. and i do mean to blow my own horn when i say we have gotten the highest rating in marching for the last 10 years i think.

I think this idea is awesome, but as of right now moving territories is impossible.

Yea, in my marching band, we have 30-ish winds, 9 colorguard, 8 battery, 2 drum majors (who also double as winds, when not conducting), and 10 pit. The first time I saw, it I thought it was huge, but after seeing some group 6 bands... :shock:

alright then

then that would mean the plan of attack would to be to come up with some wort of awesome formation for the band to be in.

i might be able to do a sketch, but other contributions would be greatly apreciated, and like i sai, il probably need help with graphics.

i was thinking the same thing for drum major, although i think it would be better if they could only attack all the section leader. or it could be a one way attack, and the only way of reaching them is through the pit?

since size was brought up, (and will need to be considered to make a realistic drawing) heres what im thinking

territories i could use for percussion

pit
~~~~~~~~~~~~
marimba(2 territories because of size)
bells
xylophone
vibraphone
timpani(again, 2 territories because of size)
gong
toys
battery
~~~~~
2 cymbals
2 tenors
4 bases
4 snares

that seems realistic. so giving a good balance id would say

30 auxillery

70 winds

okay i gotta go now but just tell me what you think

And don't forget the string instruments, most marching bands have one (usually a guitar).

And what do you mean by toys in the pit?

In case anyone was wondering about my game, we were marching in the rain, and we lost the game 28-6.

toys is the genric term used for all those instruments like tamborine, triangle ect.

strings are actually pretty rare but we could put those in

you think maybe a drum set too?

auxillery is colorguard and poms, i was thinking baton people too.

oh my bad i misunderstood auxillery #-o
i have never seen a band in the entire of arizona have a string, i know they exist but they are rare
yeah a drum set would be nice. so what are you going to do for a formation? for awesomeness u should make it the CC logo

im assuming you mean the star in the circle thing?

the only problem with that design is there is only five points where the two parts of the design converge.

it could be a centerpiece of sorts for the formation with other band members adding onto the shape in various ways. at the very least if thats what we went with then i would have the design be the winds(and battery, or possibly have them in the center) with the auxillery surrounding them some way.

the other thing i dont like about it is very few of the territories will be close to the front and thus there will be not alot of borders for the pit/drum majors and i dont want any section to be too isolated.

so if we can figure that stuff out it would be an awesome design to have

very true, but can you do this, have a few color guard make it? like the red part of the logo is color guard and the star is empty i think that would be interesting ebcause then between each secti9on of the red there is only oone person linking them

i think that would cause there to be alot more colorguard than there should be compared tp the number of winds

and it would force us to have five different colorguard continents (or one thats ridiculously hard to capture)
