An Important Question

:?:
I was wondeing if I could make a map about Robert Louis Stevonson's Treasure Island. I got the idea when looking at the map in the front of a Treasure Island book. I drew It out and changed it.
For example I changed Skeleton Island into Skeleton Island S. and Skeleton Island N. I also made up some names for the regions. I have seven contenents, +1 autodeploy for treasure, and bonuses for moutains, forests, a spring, and and water.I was wondering about the copyright issue because he died like 100 years ago.

There is already a map in progress or in the scrap heap of treasure island: viewtopic.php?f=242&t=56819

However, it is in temporary retirement, so you could probably still take a shot at it. I think if they let this one pass, then there will be no copyright issues.

if author die 80-100 years, then he can use names from book, and he can create new map.
Or he can try to find original map.

Treasure Island dates back from 1883, so as I understand it the information contained within is public domain. But like MrBenn suggested, any illustrations from a printing made in the past 75 years is still protected by copyright. You want to make sure that you are using information from the book, and NOT just lifting illustrations from a copy of the book.

Oh, and I'm moving this to Map Ideas, where I think it belongs.
