Since the Roman Empire map idea has been beaten down, FRSmk3 and myself have decided to pursue something along the lines of the Silk Road with contemporaries of Rome. this is my basic image http://www2.hawaii.edu/~majid/graphics/ ... ad_map.gif

coudl work out, jsut try not to make it too linear, which seems almost inevitable if you're doing a route map.

I'm planning to put some steppe raider territories to the north to counteract that :D :)

I'm working on that, this was just to make sure the idea was good, now I'm working out some of the rough points, such as continents. Right now I'm looking at the Roman Empire in the west, then the Parthian (persian) Empire, then the Mauryan Empire, and to the far east the chinese empire, then to the north steppe raider territory. I might also work something with the oceans to the south. anything else before I start the basic image? this is my first attempt at a map so any pointers would be most appreciated :D :)

It looks strange, because the regions are not connected... but Im interested. I want to see the next step before I can give my opinion properly.

Dont be silly, this is about the old world and is so much better than eurasia. If u insist on quitting this at least make sure Mr. K takes over.

You should use information from Wikipedia - it's really detailed, perhaps you could borrow some things:

like this Han dynasty map - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/e ... sation.png

Note that some of the Macedonians (followers and descendants of Alexander's Emprie) actually settled in an area called Greco-Bactria in Central Asia. The Han Dynasty came across them, initially fought them (perhaps for their Thessalonian horses), then traded with them, and that is how the Silk Road eventually came to be. They were called the "Ta-Yuan"; the topic is a featured article on Wikipedia.

I'm ready to really get going on this, finally got some time on my hands. I've relized that I have no idea where to get started on this image. I've got an idea about the general layout, but I'm unsure of where to begin in creating it since I basically have to go from scratch. Anybody who's got some advice about where to get started let me know, thanks :D :)

P.S. I have read all the how to make a map threads, but they're pretty weak on image development, if I've missed something please point it out

I have finally found a workable image for this map. This is where I need some help, I"m not sure as to what to do as far as turning this into a map. Any advice would be appreciated :D :)
I'm planning to include continents of the Roman Empire, Han China, The Mauryan Empire (north India), the steppe raiders in the north, and possibly the Parthian Persian Empire in the Middle East

Using a modern map? I would find a site to get maps covering how it was back then.

I've been looking everywhere I can, but I can't find any image that I can work with. I've got plenty of maps showing where all the empires were, but I can't seem to find ont that could be turned into a map. Any suggestions or mapswould be greatly appreciated. :D :)

Maybe get separate maps of the empires, with their subdivisions, and put them together, to scale. That's what I'm trying to do with the Caucasus map.
