World 3.0 (The Grandfather of all Maps)

Since the classic map has been taken down (and replaced with some shapes), we need a new showcase map, one that can represent this site. One that can still represent the geographical style and basic gameplay of the original Risk style map. No gimmicks. Thats what draws people to this site. We need a map that lack can plaster on ad's or the homepage, and is badass. One that will make those folks at cartographersguild.com envy us.

Plus - we need a map with LOTS & LOTS of Territories. So many maps are coming out with 36 territs or 48 territs. That's cool. But I think the masses are craving some more Battle Royale maps. Games with so many possibilities. Epic games.

Sure the World 2.0 map is a great map, and was the 2nd most popular after the classic map. But it's just so plain and boring (no offense zim).

I'm willing to do this... BUT... my problem is the size restrictions. I'll make this map. However, i'll only make the Large map. It's the only way to accomplish what I want to do. Call-out boxes have been suggested (similar to the Iraq map). It's an option, but will cause the map to not have the look I want.

Here is a skeleton I just created to show my thoughts.
So those are my thoughts - what are yours? Mr. Lack.. :? Will you agree to this LARGE MAP ONLY? I will work for free.

I love the look of it, and hope you get a green light. I'll surely support this :)

Interesting idea...

I hope they let you go through with the large map only idea. Somehow I doubt they will.

My thoughts exactly. It'd be great if you could do this, but I don't really see it happening :|

Do you mind my asking how long it took to make that draft? And how do you do the outlines of the continents?

great idea....but world 2.1 is an absolutely awesome map...
it is the exact no frills, boring look and play of it that makes it so

no tricks...just pure strategy, and though luck is involved...far more games can actually be decided by strategy
i look forward to what you have planned anxiously... good luck

about 2 hours i guess.
The borders are all just 1 px brush hand drawn with my mouse.
I colored in all the land. Then selected it, expanded by 4px and filled on a new layer. Took the layer opacity to 0, and added a 1px stroke, and reduced the stroke to about 40%. Then I did the same thing, and reduced that opacity to about 20%. Thats it.

Awesome. How do you expand it without losing the centering?

See if this explains a little better:

Edit:
And I went to this page: http://webdesignledger.com/freebies/29- ... ks-of-2008
to get a good grunge texture to very lightly overlay.

Thanks hecter. I guess it does. But my goal is not an abstract version of the world map. Just a prettier one, with more territs, that's easy to identify borders. Don't worry - I have very little hopes for this.

Mercator map projections are always visually pleasing, though if you need space changing to an equal-area map could work better.

I don't follow that pep? You mean do not keep the aspects of the land as they really are?

Are you looking for something, in the territory range, in between Classic and World 2.0? Or more than 2.0?

excellent idea. please finish Brazil first. pretty please. with a cherry on top even.

don't ask for NO small map. ask for a world 2.1 sized map. 700x610 small and 900x784 large

I don't see how you're going to be able to accomplish that... World 2.0 has pretty much maxed it out in terms of how many territories you can have for a map of the world, and you've got that inch of deadspace at the bottom of the map... I just can't see it.

Yeah... I don't really see how you could pack many more territories in.

the S America you have has 12 territories.
The one on W2.1 has 14 territories. You're already a few behind w2.1

Look at his draft. I already see space for more territories. It can be done!

how big are you talking here?

And one thing that bugs me about World maps is the space devoted to the polar regions... any thought given to using a different map projection?
edit: I see that there has been.

There are always nice compromises, like the Robinson projection. Those would give you more room to place territories as well.
