What would you say about a map with music genres as territories?
I think it's a category that needs to be covered, as will others -hopefully- agree.

I haven't made an example yet, as I don't think it's necessary at this stage.

The main problem is that people might feel their genre is left out, as "How can you be as general as to say rap? East Coast and West Coast are like TOTALLY different." might become a common complaint.
The great number of genres does make it very flexible on how many territories you want. I can make a map with 20 territories or one with 15.435 (so to speek). I could also go with only a small portion, like electronic or rock or pop or whatever.

Some examples:
Example 1 - Quite biassed, though I can't say the boy is an absolute music numpty, judging by the names he has posted.
Example 2 - Impressive quality, though it only covers electronic music, and painstakingly detailed.
Example 3 - Not that bad actually, though I don't like the general set up.
Example 4 (an entire site, not an image) - Only covers electronic music, though very thorough.

Would it be genres as continents, and artists from each genre as territories?

There are more than enough genres and it is easier to link them up than to link up artists.
Continents would depend on how you plan to categorise them. Either by bigger genres (like rock, dance, experimental, classic,...) or by origin (US, Jamaica, Western Europe, Mediterranean, Africa, Asia), though the latter might have too few of these locations.

Maybe classic music? I think that you would be able to fairly place many music genres into classic gameplay, right?

The problem for this would be if people want another classic like map, but I don't see why anybody wouldent want to see it go forward. I would he happy to work with you in this map in depth, if you like, the idea I simple yet intriging

I think it was something that was missing and it could get quite some fans.

I'm not sure if you mean actually going with the same territories and lay-out as the classic map or just using basic gameplay. I'm a bit reluctant on whether we need another classic map, but that would probably yield the most success.
I'm fine with whatever direction it goes in, but I suggest we first randomly list music genres to see at how many we get aprox. If it is around 40, we'll go with the classic gameplay, otherwise, we might decide otherwise (or not). How does that sound? (pun not intended).

I would be glad if you helped on this one.

EDIT: A list of genres (aka What I could come up with without going into needless detail)
Classical music: Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque (Bach etc.), Classicism (Mozart), Romanticism (Wagner), Contemporary (could be split in Impressionism, Avantgarde, Modernism, Minimalism)
Traditional: Middle East, Japanese, Chinese, Indian, African,Balkan, Indigenous
"Modern": Country, Blues, Jazz, Jamaican Dub
Rock: Rock'n'roll, Indie, Punk, Alternative, Drone, Industrial, Heavy Metal, Progrock, Britpop
Pop: Poprock, synthpop
Dance: Techno, House, Electro, Dancehall, Trance, Disco, Rave, Acid
Electronic: UK Garage ( split in Gargae, Grime, 2-step), Dubstep, Experimental (collection of IDM etc.), Drum'n'Base, Ambient, Glitch (just because it's special)
Urban: Hip hop, rap, R'n'B, Trip hop, Turntablism
And then you have the various "new" genres: New Wave, New Beat, Nu metal
Don't worry, the categories aren't final, I just split them up to make it a bit less random.

EDIT 2: Just came to think of Soul, Funk, Ska, Folk, Latino, Noise, Schlager and Reggae

EDIT 3: If you want info on one, just say the word. Also, you are free to add things you think should make the list.

Where you go Rock > Heavy Metal, you could expand further. This might not be applicable as it could create an 'inbalance' but if you expand on Classical Music and some others it could be pretty good.

Heavy Metal: Death Metal. Black Metal. Grindcore. Symphonic Metal. Emo? This is simply off the top of my head - but there's clearly more.

I didn't expand on metal further, as I tried to give everything the same amount of detail,though I must say Metal could have deserved about 3 divisions, if you look at the amount of detail I currently have. The reason I didn't, was because it's hard to find exactly three divisions that represent all, as all sub genres are rather narrow.
In case you wondered, I can name a few more genres, so it isn't because I know nothing of metal: thrash, speed metal, doom metal, christian metal and some "core" genres.

The problem with expanding classical music is that there's really not much to add. I can only think of Musique Concrete (early minimalism), Galante (like Vivaldi), neoclassicism and neoromanticism, but they are short lived movements, who don't really belong in the list.

I need to know what amount of territories you all want and based on that, we'll set the detail.

For territories I'd say high-30s to 40s, because I think there are enough genres to get that far.

The current list is around 60 genres.
The problem, as I see it, with a small map (42, as in the classic map) is that you need to tailor the categories quite rudely to make them fit in. And you end up throwing out all the specials.

Wikipedia won't be necessary I believe, I can handle it myself, unless I have to go to 80 and above.

EDIT: With low territory count, you also miss out on the opportunity to teach something to the players, which some regard as one of CC's strengths. If I have to keep to low counts, I can't mention the oddities, which people might google after playing or something. (I could even make a thread with info on them).
It's up to you guys to say if that's actually necessary though.

I think the map is ok, but personally it doesn't feel complete right, as it obviously isn't that correct and equally represented.

I think you should keep J-Pop over Latino. Reggae deserves to be included though.

Was your plan to base this map on Classic? Or was this just for a demonstration? Personally, I was imagining something similar to 8 Thoughts. There could also be more complex bonuses, rather than just the normal continents. After all, it's not your regular map.

J-pop didn't really fit in the category. Besides, it's not really a genre as it misses as good as all traditional Japanese influences and is basically just pop in Japanese, so it would better be left out in favour of for example teen pop or so.
Latino has more unique features (if you see it as the collective noun for all Hispanic styles) and had more influence on music in general.

Sinctheassassin proposed doing a classic map. The benefit is that it will more easily get players and thus make more people happy who wanted to play a music themed map.
The drawback is of course, as demonstrated, the low representativeness of reality.

If I wouldn't go with the classic map, there would be room for more complex bonuses.
I thought of keeping the graphics in the style of a scheme, showing what evolved from what and what related to what, in the style of the second and third image I linked to in my first post (but then graphically more pleasing).
