1st USAS contest -- Connecticut

Postby Dukasaur on Fri Jul 21, 2017 4:54 am

Part of the USA Supertournament event.

Several maps in the USA have not been decided. These are indicated in the original list by "TBA". These contests are being run to determine the best maps to represent states which have not already been decided.

This contest is the first in the series, and it is here to determine the map which best represents Connecticut.

Suggestions and reasoning:

  • Conquer 4 (because it's based on CONNECT 4. CONNECTicut, get it?)
  • Prohibition Chicago - (Conn never ratified the 18th amendment)
  • The Netherlands (The first Europeans to explore the area that would become Connecticut were the Dutch.)
  • Woodboro (Vintage Radio And Communications Museum of Ct in Windsor, Ct
  • Crossword (CT is home to the oldest U.S. newspaper still being published and has approx. 144 newspapers published in the state.)
  • Northwest Passage (Connecticut's national animal is a Sperm Whale, which can be found in the bodies of water north of the state, the area Northwest Passage is based on.)

General Rules of the Contest
  • There can be no duplications. A map that is already assigned to another state cannot be used again.
  • Before a poll is put up, the thread will be open for at least a few days for people to add suggestions.
  • Anyone can make a suggestion, but please limit yourself to one suggestion.
If the list is short, I may accept a 2nd suggestion from people who have already made one.
  • Once the poll has been posted, no more suggestions will be accepted.
  • The poll will run for at least a week.
  • Once the poll closes, if any suggestion has a majority of the votes, it will be accepted.
  • If no suggestion has a majority, but the top suggestion has more votes than the 2nd and 3rd place suggestions combined, it will be accepted.
  • If neither of those is true, the top 3 suggestions will be referred to the Community Team for a final decision.
  • The person who made the winning suggestion will get a lovely Image GA medal.
  • If the winner was chosen by clear majority or by the "1>(2+3)" rule, then the winner will also get 1000 credits!
  • If the winner was chosen by a Community Team shortlist procedure, then the winner will get 400 credits and the authors of the other two suggestions on the shortlist will get 300 credits each.

I nominate...
Conquer 4 because it's based on CONNECT 4.
CONNECTicut, get it?

Northwest Passage. Connecticut's national animal is a Sperm Whale, which can be found in the bodies of water north of the state, the area Northwest Passage is based on.

I actually saw this thread earlier without content and wondered what the f*ck was going on.

And Noah Webster was born in Connecticut.

Nope, CT didn't stay the course.
''It was proposed by Congress on December 18, 1917 and ratified on January 16, 1919. Both Rhode Island and Connecticut would reject this amendment (though Connecticut did eventually ratify it on May 6, 1919 after it had already been added to the Constitution).''

1. I still find my Conquer 4 = CONNECTicut 4 to be the only option that shows playful wit. Such clever wordplay is a fine CC tradition that should be celebrated.

The other options all rely on tenuous or ersatz ad hoc historical or symbolic connections.
Ranking these in descending order of appropriateness we get...
2. Netherlands
3. Crossword
4. Woodboro
5. Northwest Passage
6. Prohibition Chicago

Options 4, 5 and 6 are particularly poor choices due to the geographic disconnect error between the chosen maps and Connecticut itself.

Poll has been posted. No more suggestions will be accepted. Additional arguments for or against an existing suggestion are fine.

To eliminate (intentional) bias, I ran the list through the List Randomizer on random.org before adding to the OP and the poll.

Please vote.

For Connecticut

My suggestion comes from Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court"

Thus one of the King Courts (I prefer the II, but the first one is fine).

Sorry.

Actually -- and this is really funny -- one of my first thoughts for Conn was about "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court". Although, based on that thought, I was going to suggest the England map, not King's Court.

Then I got busy with other stuff, and forgot to put my idea in. So, yeah, don't feel bad about missing the deadline. I forgot to put my own idea in my own thread!!! Duh!

AND?!?

You speak of tenuous connections - this one is it (at best).

I may vote for myself, well - because.

Even tough I think Crosssword fits, I hate that map and may need to eliminate it.

I like the idea of The Netherlands, especially if Dutch settling is true - I'm too busy to do my own research.

I think the Woodsboro connection is the cleverest and may vote that way.

Hmmm............Myself, Netherlands, or Woodsboro................

Actually, the link between radio and Connecticut is pretty random. That museum in Connecticut is just one of numerous radio museums in existence.
