Two key points, it seems to me, is when did we know for sure it belonged to the Chinese and when did we get a clear idea of its likely purpose (weather, military, espionage or surveillance, or other). I missed that first time around. I don't think you're a dummy, but you certainly are incorrect about the capabilities of balloons and geosynchronous orbit.

Though if you meant to infer they should have captured the balloon with something towed by a Blackhawk, or other helicopter. I might agree.

They may have used the missile to prevent being too close in case it was full of hydrogen but in that case some tracer rounds should have proven otherwise.

While the megaton war head theory is ever so slightly better than one with a controllable balloon leaving cloud cover. I just don't believe China wants to blow things up yet.
