Hrmm I dont think so, that black smudge could be one of his shoes but it would be pretty hard to do. The reason he is so close to the front wheel with his legs in a funny spot is the momentum of him ploughing towards the front of the bike from the initial flip.

I'd say the initial flip came from an unseen object hit because water was covering it.

The books were actually interesting, taking the idea of vampires and flipping it around, considering some interesting "what if"s. Stephanie Meyer is good at that.

I do agree about the opening sequence of "UP' though: awesomely well done, and extremely moving.
