I'll be modifying the list according to your opinions

As you decided, the list will consist of 20 movies according to the taste of the CC comunity (or of those who read Monkey Business).

Top 20 Movies

1. The Godfather
2. Shawshank Redemption
3. The Godfather II
4. Pulp Fiction
5. A Clockwork Orange
6. American Beauty
7. Apocalypse Now!
8. Annie Hall
9. Seven
10. Silence of the Lambs
11. Memento
12. Princes Bride
13. The Pianist
14. Schindler's List
15. Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain
16. Nuovo cinema Paradiso
17. La vita è bella
18. The Graduate (not my personal fav. it's been mentioned a couple of times)
19. Back to the Future (is there space for a "modern classic" like this one?)
20. The Hurt Locker

This is only preliminar, now rant and rave.

The Departed may make Scorsese's top 10, when all is said and done and these lists are made. But top 10 ever is pretty ludicrous.

That's why I'm asking for your opinions, I know I'm leaving a lot of movies out, filling the gaps with movies that occurred to me at that moment, but if you help me with your list we can come up with a better list don't you think?

I liked The Departed, good acting, good music, and the style.

Let's keep the old movies out, maybe since the 70's it's ok. ( I ask this because there's always a debate with movies like Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, Citizen Kane, One Flew over the Cucous nest, Sunset Blvd and the like).

The Star Wars Holiday Special needs to be on that list.

I would put Godfather II ahead of Godfather I.

Some more on my list (although I wouldn't make a top 10... more like top 50):

- Monty Python and the Holy Grail
- The Princess Bride
- Braveheart
- Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (the best of the six)
- The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (the best of the three)
- Taxi Driver

I'm not sure I'd put Shawshank on their either, but that's me.

- The Matrix

I'm not sure I'd put Dark Knight on their either, but that's me.

wat

I say 6/10 of the top 10 movies are pre-'70s. Godfather, Schindler's List, Shawshank, Raging Bull are the other 4.

3. The Godfather II
4. Pulp Fiction
5. A Clockwork Orange
6. American Beauty
7. Great Expectations
8. The Departed
9. Annie Hall
10. Dark Knight

This is what it pops to my mind, and its very personal, it will change anyways.

Personally, I hated Pulp Fiction and The Dark Knight. I've never seen Annie Hall, so I'll have to add that to my list. The others are all very good.

I'd put Patton on there, myself. No other ones come to mind immediately.

Dark knight was good, but I don't think it was better than The Natural

Meh. It's not a real list from 1970 on
nietzsche wrote:( I ask this because there's always a debate with movies like Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, Citizen Kane, One Flew over the Cucous nest, Sunset Blvd and the like).

I don't get it. If there's no debate, what's the point of this thread?

The Dark Knight has some great sequences, although you maybe right on not deserving being on the list. The acting by Ledger is great, and I said this before his death.

Uhm, If some of these movies are below the 70s, then I meant 60s :D

The reason I don't like to bring old movies to discussion is because it's another category in my POV, they have to be analyzed differently. And besides, they'd occupied half of the list.

I would ask for a movie to be voted twice before considering a space in the list, If I haven't watched, I'll watch it.

The first candidate to go out of the list is Great Expectations, personally I love it, but I agree that most people think it's just sunday entertainment.

I agree with 44, if you're going with 70s-on that cuts out a huge library of really great films (which is probably the majority of the films I've seen :? ) and makes the whole endeavor kind of pointless. Regardless, from '70 on, here's my input:

-Network deserves some discussion. Magnificent screenplay and the acting is phenomenal.
-I usually consider the LotR trilogy as a single film, because the screenplays were written at the same time, they were filmed at the same time, and they follow the same story so closely that if you pick one piece of the three, then you're only getting one third of the experience.
-I dunno if Dark Knight is Top 10 worthy. Top 25 almost certainly, but not quite Top 10.
-I hate Great Expectations solely because the book was terrible to read (I'll admit I haven't seen it, but I understand it's a reset in modern day, which I think would defeat a lot of its purpose, but that's just me)

Fastpost add-on:

Well, if we're counting 60s in this thread:

-The Graduate. My favorite film all time. Great direction, great acting, great everything.
-Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. I saw this for the first time yesterday, so maybe I'm a little high on it right now, but it's still worth a look.

I'll leave some for others.

And I'll agree, there's a big content divide from the beginning of film to the point where the ratings system switched in the late 60s, though I don't think it's worth excluding a huge chunk of film history over. However, if we are going to have a divide there, maybe a second thread wouldn't be a bad idea.

Ok, what if I add another top 10 for movies before 1960? or the classic movies if the border is more accurate?

Because if we consider them in the same group they'll take at least 5 spots for most people. Leaving good modern movies out. The Godfather I and II are already classics, but one can say they belong to the modern times, the first one barely crossing the line. Pulp Fiction is or will become a classic.

In fact, would you agree to make this a Top 21 of after 1960 movies and a Top 10 of classic movies?

I'm not trying to confuse here, one of the reasons of this thread is to get suggestions of movies to watch since I watch almost all new good ones :D

I didn't care for The Natural either. Far too hokey.

Hell no. Although I see what would make someone mention this movie, it is nowhere near the top 40.
